{"id":3792,"date":"2011-01-05T11:13:06","date_gmt":"2011-01-05T19:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=3792"},"modified":"2011-01-05T11:13:06","modified_gmt":"2011-01-05T19:13:06","slug":"blue-dog-to-challenge-pelosi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/05\/blue-dog-to-challenge-pelosi\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue Dog to Challenge Pelosi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">One of the few Democrats who did their job in the last two years is Nancy Pelosi.&#160; I may not have agreed with her on many issues, but she got legislation passed in the House and deserves to continue as Minority Leader.&#160; While I have no doubt that she will easily defeat Heath Shuler (DINO-NC), I feel riled that a gelding with his voting record would have the indecency to even challenge her.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"5bluedog\" border=\"0\" alt=\"5bluedog\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/5bluedog.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"285\" \/>As she prepares to turn over her speaker&#8217;s gavel Wednesday to a Republican, Nancy Pelosi has a rival within her own ranks to lead the Democratic minority in the House of Representatives. She isn&#8217;t likely to lose that post, however. <\/p>\n<p><strong>North Carolina Rep. Heath Shuler will put his own name forward Wednesday as a candidate for House minority leader, continuing his pledge not to support Pelosi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not clear just how much support Shuler will get in what&#8217;s sure to be a failing effort, but the move continues his work to raise his profile as a conservative voice within the caucus. <\/p>\n<p>Shuler is among several moderate-to-conservative Democrats who blame Pelosi for the party&#8217;s sweeping losses to Republicans in November. <strong>The election decimated the membership of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition<\/strong>, of which Shuler is now co-chairman, and saw significant damage among Southern Democrats from Virginia to Texas.<\/p>\n<p>After the election, Shuler ran against Pelosi for minority leader in a closed-door Democratic caucus meeting.
