{"id":3722,"date":"2010-12-27T11:16:06","date_gmt":"2010-12-27T19:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=3722"},"modified":"2010-12-27T11:16:06","modified_gmt":"2010-12-27T19:16:06","slug":"action-alert-reform-the-democratic-caucus-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/12\/27\/action-alert-reform-the-democratic-caucus-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Action Alert: Reform the Democratic Caucus Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">While reading an article by David Waldman on filibuster reform I came across an old statement reminding me that Senate Democrats said they intend to reform the rules for their own caucus by electing the Chairs of Senate Committees.&#160; The current method is the seniority system and it has lead to such abominations as Blanche Lincoln over Agriculture and Joe Lieberman over Homeland Security.&#160; The seniority system tends to put the most bought and paid for, business as usual, progress resistant, politicians in the positions of greatest power.&#160; While electing the Chairs is not a not a guaranteed solution to the Senate\u2019s many ills, it would give younger, more progressive Senators a greater voice.&#160; It also would tend to keep well established DINOs, with an ongoing record for backstabbing America by voting with Republicans out of such positions.&#160; Both health care and financial reform would have been much stronger, had they not been shepherded by Baucus and Dodd, respectively.&#160; The problem is that Democrats announced this intend way back in March.&#160; Frankly, I had forgotten all about it.&#160; Have they?<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 2px 0px 0px 10px; display: inline; float: right\" title=\"Dino\" alt=\"Dino\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Dino.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"416\" \/>In an <\/font><\/font><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2010\/12\/24\/931070\/-Is-Senate-rules-reform-a-power-grab\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\" face=\"Calibri\">earlier post<\/font><\/a><\/font><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">, I noted that Senate Democrats who fretted that rules reform would be attacked as a &quot;power grab&quot; were hiding behind an excuse from which they (intentionally) could never escape. And that though the party that changes the rules will have to absorb that attack,<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">they will still, in the end, be the party that <span style=\"text-align: left\"><em>got it done<\/em><\/span>. And that will be what matters on the day after the political points from the attack are scored. <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Democrats who allow this potential attack to dissuade them are essentially saying that the only party they&#8217;ll permit to change the rules is the other one. They&#8217;d rather wait and lob an impotent and hackneyed political charge that will fall on deaf ears and in any case be disregarded and forgotten in the wake of the majority&#8217;s newfound ability to act, than take charge and actually be a part of a majority that could take the reins itself.
