{"id":3690,"date":"2010-12-22T13:22:59","date_gmt":"2010-12-22T21:22:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=3690"},"modified":"2010-12-22T13:22:59","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T21:22:59","slug":"net-neutrality-a-promise-kept","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/12\/22\/net-neutrality-a-promise-kept\/","title":{"rendered":"Net Neutrality: A Promise Kept?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">There has been much ado about the Net Neutrality regulations passed by the FCC.&#160; It is taking a lot of heat, both from the right and from left.&#160; At the same time Democratic politicians and pundits are claiming that this measure satisfies Barack Obama\u2019s campaign promise.&#160; Does it?<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px 0px 0px 10px; display: inline; float: right\" title=\"netneutrality\" alt=\"netneutrality\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/netneutrality.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" \/>Yesterday, the Federal Communications Commission passed \u201cnetwork neutrality\u201d regulations, which aim to ensure equal access to all legal Internet content. Service providers will not be allowed to block rival services, nor will they be able to divide traffic to certain sites into fast and slow lanes, thus giving priority to preferred web content providers. The new regulations are still opposed by many open internet groups for <\/font><\/font><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freepress.net\/press-release\/2010\/12\/21\/free-press-fcc-net-neutrality-order-%E2%80%98squandered-opportunity%E2%80%99\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\" face=\"Calibri\">not going far enough<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Calibri\">, and came after years of debate and <\/font><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.forbes.com\/brianwingfield\/2010\/12\/21\/fcc-ruling-on-net-neutrality-promises-more-lobbying\/?boxes=financechannelforbes\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\" face=\"Calibri\">millions of dollars<\/font><\/a><\/font><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"> of lobbying.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">The announcement of a new federal regulation prompted a characteristic outburst from conservative leaders, who have <\/font><\/font><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/201011300023\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\" face=\"Calibri\">consistently fear-mongered<\/font><\/a><\/font><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"> against net neutrality regulations as an evil progressive scheme to control the Internet. On the Senate floor, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) accused the Obama administration of trying to \u201cnationalize\u201d and \u201ccontrol\u201d the Internet; radio host Rush Limbaugh also said Obama just took over the Internet (at the behest of George Soros, of course) and suggested Hugo Chavez would be jealous:<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">\u2013 McCONNELL: Today the Federal Communications Commission is expected to approve new rules on how American access information on the Internet. There\u2019s a lot of people rightly concerned. \u2026 <span style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>The Obama administration, which has already nationalized health care, the auto industry, insurance companies, banks, and student loans, will move forward with what could be the first step in controlling how Americans use the Internet<\/strong><\/span> by establishing federal regulations on its use\u2026.The Internet is an invaluable resource. It should be left alone. As Americans become more aware of what\u2019s happening here, I suspect many will be alarmed, as I am, at the government\u2019s intrusion. They\u2019ll wonder, as many already do, if <span style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>this is a Trojan horse for further meddling by the government<\/strong><\/span>.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">\u2013 LIMBAUGH: Today the FCC approved a proposal by chairman Julius Genachowski to give the FCC power to prevent broadband providers from selectively blocking web traffic. And that\u2019s just a ruse. Net Neutrality is not what this is really all about. This is about the feds wanting to control the Internet just as they control the public airwaves. <\/font><span style=\"text-align: left\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><strong>They want to be able to determine who gets to say what, where, how often \u2014 they want to be able to determine what search services are providing what answers to your queries. It\u2019s total government control of the Internet, and the regime has just awarded it to itself.<\/strong><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">It\u2019s another gleaming aspect of free speech, free market, <\/font><span style=\"text-align: left\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><strong>private industry Obama has decided to take over as a Christmas present to himself and the Democrat National Committee and to Mr. Soros. He\u2019s even beaten Hugo Chavez to the punch.
