{"id":3670,"date":"2010-12-20T13:41:04","date_gmt":"2010-12-20T21:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=3670"},"modified":"2010-12-20T13:41:04","modified_gmt":"2010-12-20T21:41:04","slug":"the-next-republican-hostage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/12\/20\/the-next-republican-hostage\/","title":{"rendered":"The Next Republican Hostage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Republican politicians and pundits are preparing their next terrorist attack against America.&#160; This is how I think it will come down.&#160; Republicans will want to cut the funding for such things as the the health care bills funding for children\u2019s health care, Elizabeth Warren\u2019s Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and the unemployment benefits extension they just held hostage.&#160; They will say that, because of all the <em>democrat spending<\/em> (most of which came from Republicans), we just don\u2019t have the money for such frivolous things.&#160; They have a problem.&#160; To accomplish their goal they will have to get Obama to sign the spending bill. But that will not be easy without the right hostage.&#160; Here\u2019s the one they are setting up.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px 0px 0px 10px; display: inline; float: right\" title=\"RepublicanPlatform\" alt=\"RepublicanPlatform\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/RepublicanPlatform.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"500\" \/>In a growing threat to the fiscal solvency of the nation, Republican opposition to raising the national debt ceiling is hardening. In the past few weeks, a number of GOPers have begun to toe the Tea Party line and declared that they will vote against any increase in the national debt ceiling, including old stalwarts like Reps. Jack Kingston (R-GA), Ron Paul (R-TX), and Jerry Lewis (R-CA), as well as new members like Reps.-elect Tim Scott [Murdoch delinked] (R-SC) and Jeff Denham (R-CA).<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">The latest freshman to come out against raising the debt ceiling is Rep.-elect Mick Mulvaney (R-SC), who defeated longtime House Budget Chairman John Spratt (D-SC) in November. Echoing Ron Paul, who declared on Thursday that a government shutdown would not \u201churt one bit,\u201d Mulvaney told <\/font><\/font><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/on-the-money\/budget\/134439-house-budget-committee-freshmen-cheered-by-collapse-of-omnibus\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-align: left\"><font color=\"#0066cc\" face=\"Calibri\"><em>The Hill<\/em><\/font><\/span><\/a><\/font><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"> that he would vote against \u201cany attempt to raise the nation\u2019s debt ceiling\u201d because he is unaware of any \u201cnegative consequences\u201d that would result:<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Rep.-elect Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.), who defeated current House Budget Chairman John Spratt (D-S.C.) in November, said he would vote against any attempt to raise the nation\u2019s debt ceiling.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">\u201cI have heard people say that if we don\u2019t do it will be the end of the world,\u201d he said. <\/font><span style=\"text-align: left\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><strong>\u201cI have yet to meet someone who can articulate the negative consequences.\u201d<\/strong><\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Mulvaney said that this year, 2011 spending needs to be reduced to 2008 discretionary levels, and argued that the demise of the omnibus offers that opportunity.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">While it\u2019s unclear if Mulvaney is being purposefully obtuse or simply sticking his head in the sand, his quandary can be answered by looking at the last time Congress refused to raise the debt ceiling. According to a recent <\/font><\/font><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/2010\/10\/big_freeze.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\" face=\"Calibri\">report<\/font><\/a><\/font><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"> from the Center for American Progress, here were some of the results:<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">&#8211; The government was shut down for nearly four weeks<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">&#8211; The entire episode cost taxpayers over $800 million<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">&#8211; Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid checks were not sent out<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">&#8211; International confidence in U.S. government bonds was shaken<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">&#8211; All non-essential government employees were sent home without pay<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">&#8211; National parks and other federally-funded services were closed<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; Since they made Obama chicken out on tax cuts for the rich over fear of the harm Republicans might do to middle class and poor workers and the unemployed, it is reasonable for them to expect that he will do likewise over fear of the harm done in a government shutdown.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">If they do follow through, they will cave in short order, just like they did when Clinton was President, so Obama must call their bluff.&#160; What worries me is that he didn\u2019t call their bluff before, even though Republicans caved in the previous four times they took unemployment benefits hostage.&#160; I fear that Obama will surrender before the fight\u2026 again.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican politicians and pundits are preparing their next terrorist attack against America.&#160;
