Top airlines around the world must pay handsomely to have the jets they order fitted with customized add-ons.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes these optional features involve aesthetics or comfort, like premium seating, fancy lighting or extra bathrooms. But other features involve communication, navigation or safety systems, and are more fundamental to the plane\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n<p>Many airlines, especially low-cost carriers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/20\/world\/asia\/lion-air-crash-boeing.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indonesia\u2019s Lion Air<\/a>, have opted not to buy them \u2014 and regulators don\u2019t require them.
