And a new software fix to address what happened during that flight was significantly delayed in part because of the shutdown.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1570266\/ethiopian-airlines-crash-us-shutdown-delayed-boeing-737-max-fixes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quartz:<\/a>  <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>After the Lion Air crash, the FAA\u2014which, with EU airline regulators, generally sets the tone for aviation safety worldwide\u2014issued a new \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/12\/06\/2018-26365\/airworthiness-directives-the-boeing-company-airplanes\">airworthiness directive<\/a>\u201d to US operators of the Boeing 737 8 and 9 planes, warning that an \u201cunsafe condition\u201d exists on the models and providing flight crews \u201cwith runaway horizontal stabilizer trim procedures to follow under certain conditions.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Straightforward safety upgrades to the jets\u2019 software to fix the automated safety feature, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/exclusive-boeing-eyes-lion-air-crash-software-upgrade-002618617--finance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">originally expected in January<\/a> according to multiple reports. But they were delayed until April, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/boeing-and-regulators-delay-jetliner-fixes-prompted-by-lion-air-crash-11549821489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Wall Street Journal reported Feb. 10<\/a>, because of \u201cengineering challenges,\u201d \u201cdifferences of opinion\u201d between federal and Boeing officials, and the 35-day government shutdown, during&nbsp; which \u201cconsideration of the fixes was suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Don&#8217;t tell the Republican Reich.
