Mueller III\u2019s special counsel investigation. But it was an unlikely candidate to become the latest example of a conflict that has vexed legal professionals and activists for decades: systemic inequality in the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/public-safety\/paul-manafort-sentencing\/2019\/03\/07\/77f527b2-3e94-11e9-9361-301ffb5bd5e6_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a federal judge handed down his sentence<\/a> in jam-packed Alexandria, Va., courtroom Thursday, and observers digested the judge\u2019s decision \u2014 47 months \u2014 Manafort\u2019s case was immediately perceived as a high-profile instance of the justice system working one way for a wealthy, well-connected man, while working in another, harsher, way for indigent defendants facing lesser crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaul Manafort\u2019s lenient 4-year sentence \u2014 <strong>far below the recommended 20 years despite extensive felonies and post-conviction obstruction<\/strong> \u2014 is a reminder of the blatant inequities in our justice system that we all know about, because they reoccur every week in courts across America,\u201d said Ari Melber, a legal analyst for NBC News, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AriMelber\/status\/1103812490654302208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a Thursday-night tweet<\/a>&#8230;.
