display: inline; float: left;\" title=\"Tom122007_Painting_Painting\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Tom122007_Painting_Painting.jpg\" alt=\"Tom122007_Painting_Painting\" width=\"320\" height=\"432\" align=\"left\" \/>Most of us were expecting Obama to cave-in on tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, and I feel thoroughly disappointed that he did.\u00a0 At the same time, I want to be fair and examine the problem from all sides.\u00a0 In his capitulation speech, Obama said several things that were true.\u00a0 It was clear that Republicans would not give ground.\u00a0 Republicans care nothing for the suffering of middle class workers.\u00a0 Had Obama held fast, as he said, millions of workers, whose real wages have gone down, over the last ten years, because of Bush\/Republican policies and current Republican obstruction would get a pay cut next month.\u00a0 Republicans used the unemployed as a human shield.\u00a0 Republicans care nothing that many workers their policies displaced will lose their homes, be unable to provide for their families, or have their Christmas dinners in soup kitchens.\u00a0 Had Obama held fast, as he said, these things would take place.\u00a0 Obama was also correct, when he said that, if he held fast, the economy would lose over a million jobs, threatening the bare beginnings of a recovery.\u00a0 So Obama had reasons for making the choice he made.\u00a0 I believe he thinks he is doing the right thing.\u00a0 I also believe he is wrong.\u00a0 Let\u2019s start with his speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/aEUYlb2eRE0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x006699&amp;color2=0x54abd6\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/aEUYlb2eRE0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x006699&amp;color2=0x54abd6\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\">\u00a0<\/embed><\/object><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">And here is the breakdown of the deal:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Times;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.8pt;\"><strong>Rates: Extends all income tax rates for two more years for all taxpayers. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Times;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.8pt;\"><strong>Unemployment: Extends unemployment insurance for 13 months, <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.8pt;\"><strong>providing benefits to 2 million long-term unemployed workers <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.8pt;\"><strong>in December and 7 million over the next year. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.8pt;\"><strong>Payroll: Cuts payroll taxes by 2 percentage points for 2011. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.8pt;\"><strong>Credits: Extends increases in the Earned Income Tax Credit, <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.8pt;\"><strong>the child credit and tuition credits adopted in 2009. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.8pt;\"><strong>Businesses: Allows businesses to write off 100 percent of their capital investments during 2011. The current write-off is 50 percent.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/politics-government\/ci_16793236\" target=\"_blank\">San Jose Mercury News<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The cuts for millionaires and billionaires remains totally unacceptable, as does the estate tax provision.\u00a0 Extending unemployment is key, buy why only thirteen months?\u00a0 When this issue comes back a year from now, what will Republicans want when they use the unemployed as a human shield again?\u00a0 The payroll cut and tax credit extensions are positive elements.\u00a0 If I understand it correctly, the business write-off just accelerates the deduction of 50% of capital investments by one year, so I don\u2019t think it will matter much at all.\u00a0 I have heard it said that this is the best deal he could get, and I agree that it was, but in this case, best just isn\u2019t good enough. Though he may save many hostages from Republican terrorism, it will serve only to encourage more of the same.
