{"id":35347,"date":"2019-01-14T12:01:50","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T20:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=35347"},"modified":"2019-01-14T12:13:23","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T20:13:23","slug":"teachers-fight-for-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2019\/01\/14\/teachers-fight-for-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachers Fight for Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This morning the teachers and other educators at the nations largest school district, the LA Unified School District, went on strike in an attempt to save the schools they serve from starvation by the predatory practices of the Republican Reich.\u00a0 While Republicans say the teachers are motivated by greed, the district and the union are very close on that issue.\u00a0 Where they are not close are class size, reductions in standardized testing, increased support staff (Most schools lack a librarian, and many don&#8217;t even have a school nurse.),\u00a0 and limitations on district creating limits on new and on spending on charter schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"Los Angeles Teachers Strike\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/0114strike.jpg\" alt=\"Los Angeles Teachers Strike\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of Los Angeles teachers went on strike Monday after contentious contract negotiations failed in the nation\u2019s second-largest school district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents, we are striking for you,\u201d teachers union President Alex Caputo-Pearl told a cheering crowd of teachers marching in pouring rain.<\/p>\n<p>Members of United Teachers Los Angeles voted last year to walk off the job for the first time in three decades if a deal wasn\u2019t reached on issues including higher wages and smaller class sizes.<\/p>\n<p>Months of talks between the union with 35,000 members and the Los Angeles Unified School District ended without a deal.
