{"id":34268,"date":"2018-11-09T09:26:45","date_gmt":"2018-11-09T17:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=34268"},"modified":"2018-11-09T09:26:45","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T17:26:45","slug":"friday-fun-lets-count-the-ways-it-was-a-blue-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2018\/11\/09\/friday-fun-lets-count-the-ways-it-was-a-blue-wave\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Fun: Let\u2019s Count the Ways It WAS a Blue Wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Make no mistake about it, despite the Faux \u201cnews\u201d <em>(sic)<\/em> blathering and <strong><em>Twitler\u2019s<\/em><\/strong> mendacious claim that it was <em>\u201cclose to a complete victory\u201d<\/em> (and when was the last time that man-child told the truth?) \u2013 it was most definitely a <strong>Blue Wave<\/strong> election.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Blue-Wave_Slow-Mo.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34269\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Blue-Wave_Slow-Mo.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being truthful, we can admit that it was not the <strong><em>Blue Tsunami<\/em><\/strong> that we had all been hoping for.\u00a0 But it was also NOT a <em>Blue Ripple<\/em> like RepubliKKKlans are trying to spin it.\u00a0 Let\u2019s get down to the nitty gritty and count the ways it does add up to a beautiful Blue Wave.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019m going to need your help doing that.\u00a0 There was so much good news on Tuesday (along with some very disappointing news, like <strong>Beto\u2019s<\/strong> loss) that I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll miss out on some of the news.\u00a0 So I hope you will add the ones I forget in your Comments.<\/p>\n<p><em>[<strong>MAJOR CAVEAT<\/strong>: As we know, votes are still being counted <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5448722\/arizona-republicans-sue-mail-in-ballots\/\">(even though republicans actually SUED in an effort to STOP votes from being counted)<\/a>.\u00a0 And totals are generally moving in Democrats\u2019 favor.\u00a0 So numbers and results are not final]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s begin with the <em><strong>\u201cBig Picture\u201d<\/strong><\/em> and look at the general trend in the 2018 Midterm.\u00a0 And to do that we&#8217;ll use the House of Representatives results since it was the only fully national election:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-Election_Map_Blue-Wave_NY-Times.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-Election_Map_Blue-Wave_NY-Times.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"738\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-Election_Map_Blue-Wave_NY-Times.png 738w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-Election_Map_Blue-Wave_NY-Times-150x96.png 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/2018-Election_Map_Blue-Wave_NY-Times-300x192.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Little too confusing?\u00a0 Let&#8217;s break it down to first show Districts that became <em><strong>&#8220;Redder&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; font-family: Verdana;\">Yup \u2013 171 Districts, while electing RepuliKKKlans, still moved to the Left!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[Above graphics from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/11\/07\/us\/politics\/how-democrats-took-the-house.html\"><em>&#8220;The New York Times&#8221;<\/em><\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>So to summarize, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NateSilver538\/status\/1060512069261422593\"><strong>Nate Silver<\/strong> of <strong><em>538<\/em><\/strong><\/a> anticipates Democrats will have taken 34 seats in the House \u2013 well above the 23 needed to gain control<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Democrats currently lead the popular vote in the U.S. House by about 6 million votes or 6% of the vote. Likely to rise to around 8 million votes and 7-8% once all votes are counted.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The final Rasmussen Reports poll said REPUBLICANS would win the popular vote. @Rasmussen_Poll<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And <strong>Prof. Sam Wang<\/strong> of the Princeton University Election Consortium is even more optimistic, showing that while it may not be the largest \u201cWave\u201d in history \u2013 it certainly qualifies as a Wave:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The NYT currently projects a national popular-vote margin of D+9.2%. The largest popular margin since 2008, larger than waves of 1994, 2006, 2010, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>1994: R+7.1%<br \/>2006: D+8.0%<br \/>2008: D+10.6%<br \/>2010: R+7.2%<br \/>2014: R+5.7%<\/p>\n<p>By historical standards, this a popular wave. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4hw71hieVN\">pic.twitter.com\/4hw71hieVN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sam Wang (@SamWangPhD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SamWangPhD\/status\/1060005925233270784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 7, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">But the good news didn\u2019t just come from the national level \u2013 it occurred at the state level, too!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">America now has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/state-elections-democrats-republican-one-party-control_us_5bd3770ee4b0a8f17ef7912a\">45 Million MORE Americans living under unified control by Democrats<\/a> from winning the Trifecta of Governor and both houses in the state legislatures!\u00a0 Not only did they gain full control in six new states \u2014 Colorado, Illinois, Maine, New Mexico, Nevada and New York \u2014 but they also broke the GOP\u2019s total hold in Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire and Wisconsin by winning control of at least one Chamber or Governor\u2019s chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Broken down, that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/11\/7\/18071410\/democrat-state-legislature-colorado-minnesota-election-results\">at least seven governorships<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/elections-and-campaigns\/statevote-2018-state-legislative-races-and-ballot-measures.aspx\">at least six legislative chambers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And all of this was accomplished by expanding the Democratic Tent \u2013 setting historic records for electing women, minorities and LGBTQ candidates \u2013 including electing the first openly gay governor in Colorado.\u00a0 Maybe it was more of a <strong><em>\u201cRainbow Wave\u201d<\/em><\/strong> than a Blue Wave.<\/p>\n<p>But the good news didn\u2019t stop with just our candidates \u2013 it extended to ballot measures and initiatives across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Voters in Michigan, Colorado, and Missouri <em>(busting with pride here)<\/em> all approved ballot initiatives to <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2018\/11\/partisan-gerrymandering-2018-election-michigan-colorado.html\">end political Gerrymandering<\/a>, with approval rates from 60 percent to more than 70 percent!<\/p>\n<p>Two states voted to increase their minimum wages requirements \u2013 Arkansas and Missouri <em>(even prouder still)<\/em>! \u00a0Both Utah and Missouri <em>(OK \u2013 I\u2019ll quit)<\/em> approved the use of medical marijuana, while Michigan went a step further approving its recreational use.\u00a0 And voters surprisingly approved Medicaid expansion in the ruby-red states of Idaho, Nebraska, and Utah.\u00a0 Plus the newly elected governors of Maine and Kansas pledged to <em>not<\/em> veto similar measures that had already passed but were blocked by their predecessors. \u00a0And voting rights were restored to felons who had paid their dues in Florida.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/waiting-inhale-ballot-initiatives-approved-pot-medicaid-minimum-wage-204940553.html\"><em>[This pretty much covers the above paragraph]<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And for a cherry-on-top (I\u2019m counting on you guys to add even more cherries that I missed in your Comments), that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/kentucky-clerk-jailed-over-gay-marriage-licenses-loses-re-election-n933451\">Bible-thumping hypocrite and homophobic clerk<\/a> in Kentucky who refused to issue Marriage Licenses to gay couples \u2013 <strong><em>Kim Davis<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 lost her election!<\/p>\n<p>While we should take a bit of time to enjoy our <strong>Blue Wave<\/strong> victories, we then need to start working on turning that Blue Wave into productive policies for America!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Blue-Wave_Faucet_NY-Times.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Blue-Wave_Faucet_NY-Times.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"462\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Make no mistake about it, despite the Faux \u201cnews\u201d (sic) blathering and Twitler\u2019s mendacious claim that it was \u201cclose to a complete victory\u201d (and when was the last time that man-child told the truth?) \u2013 it was most definitely a Blue Wave election.
