{"id":3365,"date":"2010-11-14T01:56:46","date_gmt":"2010-11-14T09:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=3365"},"modified":"2010-11-14T01:56:46","modified_gmt":"2010-11-14T09:56:46","slug":"its-not-treason-when-we-do-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/11\/14\/its-not-treason-when-we-do-it\/","title":{"rendered":"It&rsquo;s Not Treason When We Do It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">When Democrats offered opinions contrary to the Republican party line during the Bush Regime, Republicans accused us of treason.&#160; They have a long history of making that accusation, anytime anyone refuses to goose-step with them on foreign policy.&#160; But now, the tables have turned.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"14treason\" border=\"0\" alt=\"14treason\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/14treason.jpg\" width=\"402\" height=\"529\" \/><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><strong><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Incoming House Majority Leader Eric Cantor sat down for a meeting with the leader of a foreign power and <\/font><\/font><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><a style=\"text-align: left\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/laurarozen\/1110\/Before_Clinton_meeting_Cantors_oneonone_with_Bibi_.html\" target=\"_blank\"><font color=\"#0066cc\" face=\"Calibri\">told him that he would serve<\/font><\/a><\/font><\/strong><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\"><strong> &quot;as a check&quot; on the administration&#8217;s foreign policy with that nation<\/strong>:<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Last night, Netanyahu met in New York for over an hour with incoming House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who is set to become the highest ranking Jewish member of Congress in history. The meeting took place at New York\u2019s Regency Hotel, and included no other American lawmakers besides Cantor. Also attending on the Israeli side were Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren, and Netanyahu\u2019s National Security Advisor Uzi Arad.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">Israeli sources characterized a one-on-one meeting between an Israeli prime minister and a lone American lawmaker as unusual, if not unheard of. Cantor&#8217;s office did not think that Cantor and the Prime Minister had held a one-on-one meeting before. <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">&#8230;<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: normal; margin: 0in; font-family: \" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Calibri\"><font style=\"font-size: 11pt\">&#8230;Now, just <span style=\"text-align: left\"><em>imagine<\/em><\/span> if the tables were turned. Think back to 2007. Imagine if Nancy Pelosi sat down with the President of France and told him that she would serve as a check on the Bush Administration. What if she followed that up by noting the 200-plus-year-old special relationship that NATO ally France has had with the United States since LaFayette? She&#8217;d still be fighting the treason charges in court today.&#160; [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2010\/11\/13\/920076\/-Cantor-tells-Netanyahu-that-he-will-check-the-White-House\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Kos<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Considering that this Republican tactic is unchanged, since their accusations against JFK through their current accusations of treason against Barack Obama, there is no doubt that the author is correct in his conclusion about Pelosi.&#160; So is turnabout fair play?&#160; Should we accuse Cantor of Treason?&#160; When Republicans accused Democrats of treason over trips to Iraq, they never went so far as to make promises to a foreign government, contrary to administration policy.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Nevertheless, I say no.&#160; Cantor\u2019s misconduct is a clear violation of ethics, as the Constitution empowers the executive branch to conduct foreign policy, not Congress, let alone the incoming House Majority Leader.&#160; I suspect Cantor may be guilty of some other crime here, and should be investigated by DOJ.&#160; I\u2019ll leave that to folks with more legal expertise than I.&#160; Cantor\u2019s misconduct does not rise to the level of treason, because we are not at war with Israel.&#160; False accusations are what Republicans do.&#160; Aren\u2019t we better than that?<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Democrats offered opinions contrary to the Republican party line during the Bush Regime, Republicans accused us of treason.&#160; They have a long history of making that accusation, anytime anyone refuses to goose-step with them on foreign policy.&#160; But now, the tables have turned.
