{"id":3200,"date":"2010-10-26T02:23:42","date_gmt":"2010-10-26T09:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=3200"},"modified":"2010-10-26T02:23:42","modified_gmt":"2010-10-26T09:23:42","slug":"an-international-climate-conspiracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/26\/an-international-climate-conspiracy\/","title":{"rendered":"An International Climate Conspiracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">If you don\u2019t believe that climate change is the result of human activity, there\u2019s no point in reading the rest of this article, because your eyes are closed.&#160; On the other hand, if you agree with me that the scientific data overwhelmingly confirms that human activity is responsible for the greatest threat our planet has faced since the dawn of humanity, it is imperative that we stop the corporate criminals on a global scale, whose lust for profit trumps the continuation of life as we know it.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 10px 5px 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"26eurocompanies\" border=\"0\" alt=\"26eurocompanies\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/26eurocompanies.gif\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" \/> As the Wonk Room has <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/gop-senate-deniers\/\" target=\"_blank\">extensively documented<\/a>, <strong>nearly all of the Republican candidates for Senate \u2014 both incumbents and challengers \u2014 dispute that the United States must take action to fight global warming pollution<\/strong>, <strong>while many of them deny that global warming exists in the first place<\/strong>. \u201cThere is much debate in the scientific community as to the precise sources of global warming,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/pg\/10165\/1065472-84.stm\" target=\"_blank\">claims<\/a> Pat Toomey, the GOP Senate candidate in Pennsylvania. \u201cGlobal warming is \u2018the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people,\u2019\u201d says [wingers delinked] Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK). <\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen if that stance will pay off at the polls, but for many of these global warming deniers, <strong>it already has paid off in the form of sizeable donations from overseas polluters<\/strong>. A new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climnet.org\/component\/content\/article\/274-eu-energy-and-climate-policy\/252-caught-eu-business-lobby-funding-climate-legislation-blockers-in-us-senate.html\" target=\"_blank\">analysis<\/a> by Climate Action Network Europe has found that <strong>large European companies that are among the continent\u2019s biggest greenhouse gas polluters have been dumping large amounts of money into U.S. Senate races<\/strong>, almost exclusively to candidates that oppose the idea of taking action to stop global warming. <\/p>\n<p>ThinkProgress has already <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/10\/23\/chamber-foreign-oil\/\">documented<\/a> how money from foreign oil companies is being directed to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which is running a $75 million ad campaign against Democratic candidates, and these direct candidate contributions from European polluters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/\" target=\"_blank\">exceed<\/a> the amount that oil billionaires Charles and David Koch have donated to Senate campaigns. <\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 0px 5px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"GOBP\" border=\"0\" alt=\"GOBP\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/GOBP2.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"316\" \/> Through U.S. subsidiaries and employees, large European polluters like BP, BASF, Bayer and Solvay have donated $240,200 to candidates who have either voiced opposition to addressing global warming, or who have actively blocked legislation that would do so<\/strong>. For example, Bayer \u2014 which emitted 2 million metric tons of CO2 in Europe last year \u2014 gave almost 73 percent of its donations to such candidates, like the $5,000 it gave to Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), who opposes the EPA finding that greenhouse gases are pollution and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opencongress.org\/bill\/111-sj26\/text\" target=\"_blank\">opposes<\/a> a cap-and-trade market to limit global warming pollution. The donations largely favored Republicans, but \u2014 demonstrating that stopping progress on addressing global warming was the key goal of these companies \u2014 <strong>select Democrats were given donations as well. Bayer gave even more money to Sen.
