I never liked Paul Ryan.\u00a0 I don’t trust him.\u00a0 This Ayn Randian sycophant is, in my opinion, treading very close to a precipice, or perhaps more accurately, has jumped from the frying pan to the fire.\u00a0 As John Nichols, author of this piece writes, “Ryan abandoned the solemn <\/span>oath<\/a> he swore \u201cto support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic\u2026\u201d <\/span>“, and that includes Trump!<\/span><\/p>\n

From The Nation <\/strong><\/a>—\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>sked at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 if the delegates had created a republic or a monarchy, Benjamin Franklin is reported<\/a> to have replied, \u201cA republic, if you can keep it<\/span><\/strong>.\u201d [emphasis mine]<\/p>\n

Paul Ryan has abandoned the effort to keep it.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>[emphasis mine]<\/span><\/p>\n

At the heart of the US Constitution is a system of checks and balances that was established primarily to guard against the concentration of power in an executive branch that might tend toward royalism. The founders of the American experiment wanted to prevent a repeat of the monarchical abuses of King George III, against which their constituents had risen in revolution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, selfappointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny,\u201d warned James Madison<\/a>, the essential author of the Constitution, who explained<\/a>, \u201cThe great security against a gradual concentration of the several powers in the same department, consists in giving to those who administer each department the necessary constitutional means and personal motives to resist encroachments of the others.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Madison asserted in the late 1780s remains true to this day: For the system of checks and balances to function, the leaders charged with responsibility for the various branches of government must zealously defend the authority of the branches they lead. They cannot allow one branch to become the extension of another.<\/p>\n

I hope you will continue reading this excellent article which sheds some historical light on the Republican shenanigans orchestrated by Ryan and Nunes.\u00a0 I use the word ‘shenanigans’ which has a less serious sound.\u00a0 In truth, Ryan’s actions, or the lack of appropriate actions, is cause for great concern.\u00a0 They set Trump up as the new king.\u00a0 King George III would be so proud to know that the US was becoming a monarchy.<\/span><\/p>\n
