Which is why, as the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20101013\/ap_on_el_ge\/us_novice_candidates_consultants_5\" target=\"_blank\">AP reported<\/a> Wednesday, GOP consultants are working overtime to recast Linda McMahon, Rick Scott, Meg Whitman and other very rich Republican candidates as regular folk. But with the wolves\u2019 in sheep\u2019s clothing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perrspectives.com\/blog\/archives\/001997.htm\" target=\"_blank\">showing their true colors<\/a> over the minimum wage, unemployment benefits and retirement security, those carefully manufactured images may yet go down in flames.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt;\">Or in the case of Oregon Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/ap\/financialnews\/D9INHB3O2.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Dudley<\/a>, up in flames.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt;\"><strong>The son of a well-to-do family who converted his professional basketball career into providing financial advice to the gilded class, Dudley has called for slashing the state&#8217;s capital gains tax rate in a move that would drain $800 million from Salem&#8217;s already broken budget<\/strong>. Like billionaire <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perrspectives.com\/blog\/archives\/001927.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Meg Whitman<\/a> in California, Dudley would be reap a big payday from the tax cuts he proposes. Then again, <strong>Dudley was even better at gaming the tax system than playing basketball<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt;\">As the <a href=\"http:\/\/wweek.com\/editorial\/3648\/14610\/\" target=\"_blank\">Willamette Week<\/a> and later <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2010\/10\/dudley_defends_350000_tax_dedu.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Oregonian<\/a> detailed, in 2004 <strong>Chris Dudley claimed a $350,00[0] tax deduction for letting the Lake Owego fire department burn down house his house in a training exercise. In a nutshell, Dudley got U.S. taxpayers to help pay for the new home he built there<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt;\">The Willamette Week described the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.oregonlive.com\/mapesonpolitics\/2010\/10\/the_chris_dudleys_house_fire_p.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dudley&#8217;s 2004 &#8220;Burn to Learn&#8221; gambit<\/a>, the same one which got ESPN announcer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/live\/content\/local_news\/stories\/2009\/07\/23\/IRSburn.ART_ART_07-23-09_A1_DDEIB64.html?sid=101\" target=\"_blank\">Kirk Herbstreit<\/a> in hot water with the Internal Revenue Service in Ohio:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: arial; color: #444444; font-size: 9.75pt;\">In December 2002, during the last of his 16 NBA seasons, then-Portland Trail Blazer Dudley bought a 1.81-acre property in Lake Oswego for $1.15 million. The property included a 4,900-square-foot home with four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a four-car garage&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: arial; color: #444444; font-size: 9.75pt;\">Dudley claimed a $350,000 deduction for the house on his 2004 federal tax return. He based the value on an appraisal he supplied to WW, which says its purpose was to &#8220;establish both the overall market value of the property, and the market value of the site.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: arial; color: #444444; font-size: 9.75pt;\">Given Dudley&#8217;s career NBA earnings of more than $30 million, he probably faced a combined federal and state income tax bill of 40 percent in 2004. That means the $350,000 deduction saved him about $140,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt;\">And while Americans debate the morality of <a href=\"http:\/\/videocafe.crooksandliars.com\/heather\/countdown-follows-cranick-house-fire-tenne\" target=\"_blank\">Tennessee firefighters<\/a> watching a man&#8217;s home consumed by flames over an unpaid $75 fee, Dudley&#8217;s burning-down-the-house scheme has gone unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt;\">Chris Dudley, it turns out, is the poster child for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perrspectives.com\/blog\/archives\/001467.htm\" target=\"_blank\">President George W. Bush\u2019s claim<\/a> that \u201cthe really rich people figure out how to dodge taxes anyway.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt;\">&#8230;And Chris Dudley isn&#8217;t content to cut business and upper-crust tax rates (including his own), as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueoregon.com\/2010\/09\/fact-check-chris-dudley-and-minimum-wage\/\" target=\"_blank\">BlueOregon<\/a> was among the first to document, . Another Dudley gift to business would be <strong>slashing Oregon&#8217;s $8.50 <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.oregonlive.com\/mapesonpolitics\/2010\/09\/dudley_frets_about_oregons_hig.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>minimum wage<\/strong><\/a>.
