{"id":311,"date":"2009-11-27T02:27:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-27T10:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=311"},"modified":"2009-11-27T02:27:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-27T10:27:00","slug":"score-one-for-obama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2009\/11\/27\/score-one-for-obama\/","title":{"rendered":"Score One for Obama!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been critical of him of late, and I don\u2019t apologize for calling them as I see them, but this time he got one right.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/s217.photobucket.com\/albums\/cc83\/TomCat1948or2\/Blog%202009\/ScoreOneforObama_207B\/greedybanker.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Happy Rich Businessman\" style=\"border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px\" height=\"244\" alt=\"Happy Rich Businessman\" src=\"http:\/\/s217.photobucket.com\/albums\/cc83\/TomCat1948or2\/Blog%202009\/ScoreOneforObama_207B\/greedybanker_thumb.jpg\" width=\"164\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> Hundreds, if not thousands, of lobbyists are likely to be ejected from federal advisory panels as part of a little-noticed initiative by the Obama administration to curb K Street&#8217;s influence in Washington, according to White House officials and lobbying experts. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">The new policy &#8212; issued with little fanfare this fall by the White House ethics counsel &#8212; <strong>may turn out to be the most far-reaching lobbying rule change so far from President Obama<\/strong>, who also has sought to restrict the ability of lobbyists to get jobs in his administration and to negotiate over stimulus contracts. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">The initiative is aimed at a system of advisory committees so vast that federal officials don&#8217;t have exact numbers for its size; the most recent estimates tally nearly <strong>1,000 panels with total membership exceeding 60,000 people<\/strong>. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">Under the policy, which is being phased in over the coming months, <strong>none of the more than 13,000 lobbyists in Washington would be able to hold seats on the committees<\/strong>, which advise agencies on trade rules, troop levels, environmental regulations, consumer protections and thousands of other government policies. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">&quot;<strong>Some folks have developed a comfortable Beltway perch sitting on these boards while at the same time working as lobbyists to influence the government<\/strong>,&quot; said White House ethics counsel Norm Eisen, who disclosed the policy in a September blog posting on the White House Web site. &quot;That is just the kind of special interest access that the president objects to.&quot; \u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/11\/26\/AR2009112602362.html\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Plenty more needs to be done to extricate our government from the greedy clutches of crony plutocrats, but at least this is a start in the right direction.&#160; Kudos!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been critical of him of late, and I don\u2019t apologize for calling them as I see them, but this time he got one right.
