{"id":30266,"date":"2017-11-18T08:16:06","date_gmt":"2017-11-18T16:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=30266"},"modified":"2017-11-18T08:16:06","modified_gmt":"2017-11-18T16:16:06","slug":"everyday-erinyes-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2017\/11\/18\/everyday-erinyes-101\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyday Erinyes #101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage.\u00a0 These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that.\u00a0 Even though there are many more which I can&#8217;t include.\u00a0 As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Alecto<\/strong><\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Megaera<\/span><\/strong>, and <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Tisiphone<\/span><\/strong>. These roughly translate as &#8220;unceasing,&#8221; &#8220;grudging,&#8221; and &#8220;vengeful destruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Less than two months ago, I included a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/2017\/09\/30\/everyday-erinyes-94\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">story about a church leader<\/a> who was fleecing the state by telling members to file fraudulent unemployment claims in order to keep their &#8220;contributions&#8221; up.\u00a0 Well, this lovely church leader is back in the news again.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2017\/11\/north-carolina-church-accused-of-kidnapping-children-with-help-from-a-county-clerk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This time it&#8217;s for kidnapping<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>North Carolina\u2019s social services laws cite \u201cfamily preservation,\u201d so as to prevent \u201cunnecessary placement of children away from their families.\u201d Yet, many children have been taken from their families and put into the custody of church members. Thus far, three single mothers have come forward to allege a county court clerk bypassed the foster system so that church members were able to obtain custody of their children, despite a judge calling the conduct inappropriate.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A child advocate who visited the church to ensure that two foster children were safe was surrounded by members after &#8220;Pastor&#8221; Jane Whaley shouted from the pulpit, &#8220;You are here to cause strife!&#8221; and called her &#8220;wicked.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cOne thing that is confusing for people in the community is how these children can be so well-behaved and so well-dressed if things are so bad,\u201d said John Huddle, who lost his children after be severed ties with the church. \u201cBut the clothing can cover the bruises and the smiles can hide the hurt.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hanky alert.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1-oE_F59Y_o\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Alecto<\/strong><\/span>, you&#8217;ve been on this case &#8211; better get reinforcements.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve addressed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/photo-deported-veterans-saluting-us-flag-goes-viral-2613629\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this issue<\/a> before, but it isn&#8217;t going away.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A photo of several deported veterans went viral over the weekend as the U.S. celebrated Veterans Day on Saturday. The soldiers protested on Memorial day this year in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently, there are about 230 people who served in the U.S. military and expected to gain citizenship, but didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>The article also states, &#8220;Serving in the military does not automatically confer citizenship&#8230;.&#8221;\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Well, dammit, it should!<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 Just think about this phrase:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30342\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DV.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"53\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DV.jpg 506w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DV-150x16.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DV-300x31.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Tisiphone<\/strong><\/span>, what kind of person can make sense of that?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/11\/14\/ms-13-prison-fight-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This next story<\/a> may need a hanky alert too &#8211; it did for me -you may be a little tougher.<\/p>\n<p>MS-13 is, according to Wikipedia, &#8220;an international criminal gang,&#8221; which originated in the 1980&#8217;s in Los Angeles and spread.\u00a0 Though El Salvadorean origin predominates among its members, a guy named Donald Trump has been leaning on them as a boogey-man to tout his wall.\u00a0 Ed Gillespie also made use of the name in his campaign, fortunately to somewhat less effect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-30343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/PCCF-300x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/PCCF-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/PCCF-150x75.png 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/PCCF-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/PCCF.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There is a prison in Massachusetts, the Plymouth County Correctional Facility, which is owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and operated by the Plymouth County Sheriff&#8217;s Department, yet is somehow also being used by ICE.\u00a0 Currently there is an activist incarcerated there named Martin Gottesfeld, who is awaiting federal trial on hacking charges related to Justina Pelletier and her treatment by Boston Children&#8217;s Hospital.\u00a0 (Martin was with Anonymous.\u00a0 It made quite a splash at the time.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know why he is still awaiting trial on charges from 2014, but he is.)\u00a0 Martin has been interviewed by and is still in touch with Ryan Grim, who is now with The Intercept (he was previously with the Huffington Post), and provided Ryan with this story.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, some members of MS-13 were moved into Martin&#8217;s unit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhen they first came in the unit, all of us were like, \u2018Oh shit, MS-13, there goes the neighborhood,\u2019 but they turned out to be model inmates,\u201d he said. Beyond their so-far-unsuccessful attempts to attend church, he said, they\u2019ve been unfailingly kind and rule-abiding. Many of them, he said, seem to have been swept up in broad conspiracy charges. \u201cContrary to the public impression that\u2019s been painted by the Tucker Carlsons of the world, these guys are ideal inmates, they wanna go to church, don\u2019t cause trouble,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think these are bad guys, not the killer rapists they\u2019re being portrayed as.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The incident which prompted Martin to bring this up to Ryan happened at breakfast.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Breakfast starts early in the BS-1 unit, Gottesfeld told The Intercept in a phone interview, and the elderly man was \u201chead food-runner,\u201d responsible for handing out trays.
