{"id":2970,"date":"2010-09-25T01:57:50","date_gmt":"2010-09-25T08:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=2970"},"modified":"2010-09-25T01:57:50","modified_gmt":"2010-09-25T08:57:50","slug":"what-republicans-dont-want-you-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/09\/25\/what-republicans-dont-want-you-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"What Republicans Don&rsquo;t Want You to Know!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">In their Pledge to America, Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/?p=2958\" target=\"_blank\">pledged<\/a> to make government more transparent.&#160; Are they telling the truth, or is this just one more in the long list of Republican lies to America.&#160; The proof is in the voting, so lets take a look.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 0px 5px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"CNP-MNS\" border=\"0\" alt=\"CNP-MNS\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/CNPMNS.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/> Despite promises of Senate Democrats to amend their signature campaign disclosure legislation, <strong>a unified Republican caucus today again blocked the legislation from an up-or-down vote in Congress&#8217; upper chamber<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans stuck together to oppose the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2010\/04\/disclose-disclaim-report.html\" target=\"_blank\">DISCLOSE Act<\/a>, a legislative response to the Supreme Court&#8217;s January ruling in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2010\/01\/supreme-court-gives-corporatio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission<\/a>, which opened the door for <strong>unrestricted sums of corporate and union treasury money to fund political advertisements<\/strong>. A unified Democratic caucus supported the legislation, voting <a href=\"http:\/\/senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_lists\/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=111&amp;session=2&amp;vote=00240\" target=\"_blank\">59-39<\/a> on a procedural vote that needed 60 votes to pass.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans <a ref=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2010\/07\/republicans-thwart-new-campaign-fin.html\" htarget=\"_blank\">successfully filibustered<\/a> the DISCLOSE Act in July as well, after the House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2010\/06\/house-passes-campaign-finance-refor.html\" target=\"_blank\">narrowly passed<\/a> the bill in June.<\/p>\n<p>The bill&#8217;s main focus is new reporting and disclosure requirements for groups that run independent expenditures, such as television ads that overtly advocate for or against federal candidates, and electioneering communications &#8212; that is, broadcast communications that feature a federal candidate but don&#8217;t expressly advocate for that candidate&#8217;s election or defeat. <\/p>\n<p>New restrictions would apply to corporations, unions, trade associations, so-called 527 groups and 501(c)(4), (c)(5) and (c)(6) advocacy organizations. <\/p>\n<p>One provision would require groups to show the names of the top donors in the advertisements and have the head of the organization or the group&#8217;s largest contributor &quot;stand by the ad&quot; &#8212; giving the same, familiar disclaimer that candidates must include in their advertisements: &quot;My name is so-and-so, and I approve this message.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the bill would prohibit companies from producing independent expenditures if they met certain criteria.
