{"id":29553,"date":"2017-09-23T00:10:54","date_gmt":"2017-09-23T07:10:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=29553"},"modified":"2017-09-23T00:10:54","modified_gmt":"2017-09-23T07:10:54","slug":"everyday-erinyes-93","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2017\/09\/23\/everyday-erinyes-93\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyday Erinyes #93"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage.\u00a0 These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that.\u00a0 Even though there are many more which I can&#8217;t include.\u00a0 As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Alecto<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Megaera<\/strong><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Tisiphone<\/strong><\/span>. These roughly translate as &#8220;unceasing,&#8221; &#8220;grudging,&#8221; and &#8220;vengeful destruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before I start on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2017\/09\/father-claims-he-set-6-year-old-on-fire-in-gun-safety-lesson-gone-wrong-but-child-has-a-different-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this first story<\/a>, I want to rant a bit.\u00a0 In our judicial systems, which mostly are hand-me-downs from British common law (Louisiana, I think has some Napoleonic influence), we generally do not consider fully acceptable witnesses, because &#8220;children lie.&#8221;\u00a0 Well, yes, children do lie; some more than others; but why do they lie?\u00a0 Well, we don&#8217;t let them handle guns on their own (mostly), we don&#8217;t let them have sharp objects (mostly), we may let them have boxing or self defense or martial arts lessons, but they are pretty well vastly outweighed by and less strong than adults.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t let them handle large sums of money (such as one might need to hire an attorney).\u00a0 What defensive weapon do they have, except lying?<\/p>\n<p>However, by and large, and particularly if they are under the age of seven or eight, they tell some kinds of lies, and they don&#8217;t tell other kinds of lies.\u00a0 They may tell fantasy lies (&#8220;There&#8217;s a fairy in the garden.&#8221;)\u00a0 They may tell very simple lies (&#8220;I didn&#8217;t do it.&#8221; &#8220;I don&#8217;t know.&#8221; &#8220;Not me.&#8221;)\u00a0 They do NOT make up possible but elaborate stories, in which cause and effect and adult motives hold together.\u00a0 They may be sharp as tacks, but they do not have the experience to do that.<\/p>\n<p>And that is why, in this case in Tacoma, WA, I absolutely believe the child who was burned by a firework gun in the hands of his father.\u00a0 Dad says he was trying to teach the child a gun safety lesson, and there was an accident.\u00a0 Son says Dad was grilling him about the whereabouts of his mother, he (son) was refusing to answer, and <strong><em>&#8220;He (Dad)\u00a0shooted me.&#8221;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-29550\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/gun-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/gun-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/gun-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/gun.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though the story says nothing about the parents being separated or divorced and Mom having a restraining order or being in a DV shelter, why else would Dad be demanding to know where she was?\u00a0 And, if not that, how could a six-year-old come up with such a circumstantial lie?\u00a0 Well, at least someone on the spot believed the child.\u00a0 Dad has been charged with third degree child assault.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Megaera<\/strong><\/span>, I hope you can keep track of this case and make sure justice is done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On another news item, we probably could all rant.\u00a0 In fact, we frequently do when we comment that someone, usually a Republican, seems not to grasp the Constitution.\u00a0 Actually, that is throwing roses at it.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the title:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2017\/9\/15\/1698815\/-New-survey-shows-a-disturbing-trend-Most-Americans-have-no-clue-what-is-in-the-Constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New survey shows a disturbing trend: Most Americans have no clue what is in the Constitution<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The survey in question is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annenbergpublicpolicycenter.org\/americans-are-poorly-informed-about-basic-constitutional-provisions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annenberg Public Policy Center<\/a>.\u00a0 It was conducted between August 9th to the 13th of this year.\u00a0 The sample size was 1,013 adults.in the U.S.\u00a0 Probably the most frightening single result was that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>53 percent think that people who are here illegally do not have any rights under the Constitution. That incorrect belief is especially strong among self-identified political conservatives \u2013 67 percent think it is accurate, compared with 48 percent of moderates and 46 percent of liberals.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-29552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Annenberg-284x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Annenberg-284x300.png 284w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Annenberg-142x150.png 142w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Annenberg-24x24.png 24w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Annenberg.png 712w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/>Forty-six per cent of liberals?\u00a0 Good heavens!<\/p>\n<p>The three branches of government?\u00a0 Only 26% could name all three (in 2011, 38% could).\u00a0 But 33% could not identify ANY branch of government.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it&#8217;s no wonder so many Americans don&#8217;t seem to grasp the Constitution.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t know anything about what is in it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not really reasonable to expect people to grasp something they know nothing about.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s been some discussion about making voting in the U.S. compulsory, and some nations do have compulsory voting.\u00a0 How do those nations handle the issue of civics education?\u00a0 I think maybe we had better find out.\u00a0 But we don&#8217;t need to find out every detail to realize we need to do better.\u00a0 Annenberg has joined with 30 other groups to form the Civics Renewal Network to offer free, high-quaity educational materials on line.\u00a0 Which is great.\u00a0 But all the materials in the world cannot help if they don&#8217;t get used.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Alecto<\/span><\/strong>, here&#8217;s a project for you.\u00a0 Come up with a coordinated, national civics education program (that&#8217;s the easy part), and then get every Federal and State legislator behind it so it can get passed and put into effect.\u00a0 Oh, and don&#8217;t forget the territories.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2017\/09\/oklahoma-pair-tortured-and-starved-5-year-old-boy-and-kicked-him-in-the-genitals-until-he-bled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this final incident for today<\/a>, the mills of justice sseem to be grinding.\u00a0 At least, the perpetrators have pled no contest and been sentenced to 20 years in prison.\u00a0 Probably not enough, but closer than many sentences we have been hearing about lately, especially when the victim was a child.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-29551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rachel-Jean-Stevens-and-Kayla-Ann-Jones-800x430-300x161.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rachel-Jean-Stevens-and-Kayla-Ann-Jones-800x430-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rachel-Jean-Stevens-and-Kayla-Ann-Jones-800x430-150x81.png 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rachel-Jean-Stevens-and-Kayla-Ann-Jones-800x430-768x413.png 768w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Rachel-Jean-Stevens-and-Kayla-Ann-Jones-800x430.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Rachel Jean Stevens, 29, and Kayla Ann Jones, 26, were each sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison for beating the boy so severely that he suffered two strokes&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Investigators found the boy had been locked in a room and bound with duct tape over his eyes, and he told police that Stevens, his mother, and her girlfriend, Jones, had beaten him with a belt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Police also said Stevens hit her son\u2019s hand with a hammer and that Jones kicked him in the genitals until he bled.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As so often happens, though it beggars the imagination of normal people, there were two other children in the home who were completely physically unharmed.
