{"id":2898,"date":"2010-09-16T01:31:43","date_gmt":"2010-09-16T08:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=2898"},"modified":"2010-09-16T01:31:43","modified_gmt":"2010-09-16T08:31:43","slug":"obama-to-make-the-right-appointment-at-last","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/09\/16\/obama-to-make-the-right-appointment-at-last\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama To Make the Right Appointment, at Last!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I\u2019ve been campaigning for Obama&#160; to appoint Elizabeth Warren to head the CFPB for months now.&#160; On Monday, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/?p=2871\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a> how Obama could use a provision in the financial reform law to put Warren to work right away, without Senate confirmation.&#160; That is exactly what he will do, within a week.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 0px 5px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"16bankster\" border=\"0\" alt=\"16bankster\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/16bankster.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"225\" \/> President Barack Obama plans to name Wall Street critic Elizabeth Warren to a special advisory role helping to set up the new U.S. consumer financial watchdog, Democratic sources said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Warren, a 61-year-old Harvard law professor, would report to Obama and the Treasury Department in a position that would bypass the Senate confirmation process.<\/p>\n<p>An announcement was likely to come on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warren is reviled by many on Wall Street for her calls to crack down on abusive lending practices by financial firms, but she is a hero to liberal activists and consumer groups<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark U.S. financial reform law, enacted in July, mandated the creation of the consumer bureau, which will have <strong>broad powers to write and enforce regulations covering mortgages, credit cards and other financial products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Warren, whom Obama has referred to as a &quot;dear friend,&quot; came up with the idea for the consumer agency.<\/p>\n<p>Several senators, including Democratic Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd and moderate Republican Olympia Snowe, have expressed opposition to putting Warren in charge of the consumer agency without seeking Senate confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Senator Bob Corker wrote a letter to Obama urging him not to bypass the confirmation process.
