{"id":28938,"date":"2017-08-11T20:21:03","date_gmt":"2017-08-12T03:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=28938"},"modified":"2017-08-11T22:54:46","modified_gmt":"2017-08-12T05:54:46","slug":"squatchs-open-thread-11-august-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2017\/08\/11\/squatchs-open-thread-11-august-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Squatch&#8217;s Open Thread 11 August 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Whoever says that there is no such thing as climate change is out of their gourd!\u00a0 We here in Metro Vancouver have had higher temperatures than usual this summer.\u00a0 This follows a snowy winter that left substantial snow packs to feed the reservoirs.\u00a0 This has meant basic water restrictions, but nothing like last year&#8217;s stage 3 restrictions.\u00a0 The winter was severe for Vancouver, and a lot longer.\u00a0 That really gets Metro Vancouverites testy.\u00a0 Of course then there are the wildfires in BC&#8217;s interior which are even worse than the 2015 fires, which is saying something.\u00a0 There has been so much smoke that the mid afternoon sun is literally blood red.\u00a0 Hopefully some of the smoke will clear out this weekend.\u00a0 My eyes and throat sure would appreciate that.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t even conceive of what the 47,000 evacuees must be feeling, although that number is down to about 7,000 for now.\u00a0 Storms elsewhere are bigger and nastier.\u00a0 As a planet, we owe it to each other to get our shit together.\u00a0 Totally unrelated, today is my 46th anniversary of when I started in the banking industry.\u00a0 Thank God I am now retired!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/grand-jury-robert-mueller-trump-russia-what-to-know-1.4236184?cmp=rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CBC<\/strong><\/a> &#8212;\u00a0In a federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., between 16 and 23 citizens have reportedly been meeting in secret for weeks, tasked with deciding whether to bring charges in a probe of alleged collusion between U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s campaign and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Collectively, they&#8217;re known as a federal grand jury. And on Thursday, reporters learned they were &#8220;impanelled&#8221; \u2014 or brought together \u2014 by the all-star team of lawyers led by special counsel Robert Mueller.<\/p>\n<p>Activating the grand jury is a sign Mueller&#8217;s Trump-Russia investigation is\u00a0heating up. Equipped with this tool, Mueller can request the issuing of subpoenas for documents and testimonies.<\/p>\n<p>It marks the next phase in his investigation\u00a0\u2014\u00a0&#8220;the most critical phase,&#8221; according to attorney Seth\u00a0Abramson, an\u00a0assistant professor at the University of New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s because it&#8217;s the phase in which he doesn&#8217;t have to rely on voluntary production of documents or voluntary testimony from important witnesses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Any requested\u00a0documents \u2014 which could include phone records, text messages, hotel and restaurant receipts and emails \u2014 get\u00a0shared with the grand jury for consideration as evidence against a target of the investigation.<br \/>\nSubpoenaed witnesses must appear in front of the grand jury to be questioned by first Mueller&#8217;s team\u00a0then the jurors themselves. Witnesses can plead the Fifth Amendment to invoke their right against self-incrimination.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Click through for the rest of this interesting, albeit long, article about this part of the US judicial system.\u00a0 It may be that some know of the workings, but my guess is that many Americans do not fully understand it if knowledge of political issues are any indication.\u00a0 Personally, being a Canuck, I found it very interesting and it is from a trusted source, not that the CBC does not make mistakes, but Matt Kwong is thorough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/canada\/americans-trying-to-bring-guns-into-canada-with-alarming-frequency\/ar-AApHE0h?li=AAadgLE&amp;ocid=spartanntp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Canadian Press<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8212;\u00a0Six Americans have been charged with bringing handguns across the New Brunswick border so far this summer, as a Canadian prosecutor says it&#8217;s proving difficult to let otherwise law-abiding people know they can&#8217;t bring firearms on vacation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The offences continue to occur with alarming frequency during the summer months,&#8221; federal prosecutor Peter Thorn said from Hampton, N.B.<\/p>\n<p>Five men \u2014 three from Florida, two from New England \u2014 pleaded guilty and were fined between $1,500 and $2,000, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Thorn, who has prosecuted these cases for years, said most of the people caught are &#8220;respectful and law abiding citizens of the U.S.A.&#8221; who are <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>unaware handguns are prohibited in Canada. [emphasis mine] &#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>That same day, a handgun was seized from a 64-year-old Jacksonville, Fla., couple at St. Stephen. He has a history of doing business with oligarchs and politicians in Ukraine and Russia that predates his political work for President Donald Trump, with payments routed through foreign banks and investments in U.S. real estate.\u00a0 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As a practical matter, the blitz of recent subpoenas to global banks poses a challenge to Manafort\u2019s ability to continue his day-to-day business activities as a consultant and investor, said one of the people familiar with the matter.\u00a0 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors in Manhattan were investigating Manafort earlier this year, examining allegations that he laundered money from eastern Europe into New York properties, according to two people familiar with the earlier inquiry. He and his administration are taking active, destructive measures to wreck the law they were elected, and in the case of HHS Secretary Tom Price confirmed by the Senate, to uphold. The latest action by the administration is to <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/dc\/trump-hhs-abandons-latino-outreach-on-obamacare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">halt federal outreach to Latinos<\/a>, one of the communities that has the highest rate of uninsurance.\u00a0 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>That labor of love included sending cabinet members to Latino communities, translating all the materials for enrollment into Spanish, working with Latino civil rights groups like LULAC and National Council of La Raza (now called Unidos), having townhall televised on Spanish-language channels, as well as an extensive advertising campaign in all forms of Spanish-language media.
