{"id":28379,"date":"2017-07-08T09:03:39","date_gmt":"2017-07-08T16:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=28379"},"modified":"2017-07-08T09:03:39","modified_gmt":"2017-07-08T16:03:39","slug":"everyday-erinyes-82","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2017\/07\/08\/everyday-erinyes-82\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyday Erinyes #82"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage.\u00a0 These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that.\u00a0 Even though there are many more which I can&#8217;t include.\u00a0 As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Alecto<\/strong><\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Megaera<\/span><\/strong>, and <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Tisiphone<\/span><\/strong>. These roughly translate as &#8220;unceasing,&#8221; &#8220;grudging,&#8221; and &#8220;vengeful destruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now, I don&#8217;t want to be picking on Canada to start here.\u00a0 In fact, I have to doubt whether, if this had happened in the US, the family could have gotten anywhere near as quick action as this gentleman&#8217;s family did.\u00a0 But it is horrifying nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>Georges Karam, 89, a resident in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/caught-on-video-elderly-ottawa-man-with-dementia-punched-in-face-11-times-by-personal-support-worker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garry A. Armstrong long term care home<\/a> for the last two years or so, kept suffering unexplained injuries, which concerned the family.\u00a0 So his grandson, an attorney, obtained permission to install a video monitor camera in his room.\u00a0 it was not a secret; besides being perfectly obvious and installed openly, the staff of the home was notified of it.\u00a0 And then the video in this story was captured.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Karam-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Karam-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Karam-150x113.png 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Karam-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Karam.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I admit I haven&#8217;t watched it.\u00a0 The screen captures were more than enough for me.\u00a0 And I won&#8217;t embed it, for that reason, and for copyright reasons (it is the property of DNG Nassrallah Law Offices.)\u00a0 And I haven&#8217;t used a screen capture here, but instead, a picture from a happier occasion.\u00a0 But those who have seen the video say that it shows the support worker, Jie Xiao, yanking Mr. Karam back and forth while removing his diaper.\u00a0 Mr. Karam, apparently agitated, is seen taking &#8220;a couple of swipes&#8221; at Xiao while the diaper is being changed.<\/p>\n<p>A third swipe, which came near Xiao&#8217;s face, apparently moved Xiao to grab one of Mr. Karam&#8217;s arm with his right hand, while, with his gloved left hand, he began to punch Mr. Karam&#8217;s face.\u00a0 The sound of the fist making contact with the face is clearly audible.\u00a0 &#8220;Gloved,&#8221; of course, refers to a disposable medical glove, not a padded glove which might protect a patient&#8217;s face.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven punches were recorded in a period of 28 seconds.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Karam\u2019s grandson, Daniel Nassrallah, an Ottawa lawyer who set up the camera, said he couldn\u2019t believe what he was seeing when he first viewed the video just after 10 p.m. on the day of the assault. Nassrallah had set up the camera \u2014 which is about the size of a baseball, lights up in the dark and had wires running from it \u2014 on the wall so he could watch the video remotely over the internet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI literally stood up and fell down, my legs gave way because I didn\u2019t know how to respond to this,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe have a camera on him, and even that doesn\u2019t deter him. To me, that\u2019s mind blowing.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Incidentally, Xiao has been arraigned and entered a guilty plea.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">(In the States, our battle over healthcare in general has<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/kevin-drum\/2017\/07\/trump-administration-wants-to-take-away-right-to-sue-nursing-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">screened the fact that a rule change<\/a> <span style=\"color: #339966;\">adopted in October 2016 designed to prevent Medicare and Medicaid residence providers from requiring agreement to arbitration as a condition of admission, which was being contested in court, has now been dropped by the current regime and will not go into effect.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Megaera<\/span><\/strong>, I&#8217;m sure that the families of long-term-care residents in city-run homes (of whom there are about 700 in Ottowa) would appreciate any help you can give them.\u00a0 Not to mention the roughly 6,800 who are in homes not run by the city, and the 3,500 more on waiting lists.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-28491\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Evelynn-Foxx-WJXT-800x430-300x161.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Evelynn-Foxx-WJXT-800x430-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Evelynn-Foxx-WJXT-800x430-150x81.png 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Evelynn-Foxx-WJXT-800x430-768x413.png 768w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Evelynn-Foxx-WJXT-800x430.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Florida, someone (probably several someones, and I&#8217;d go out on a limb and guess they wear a lot of sheets) is out to get the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2017\/07\/naacp-head-finds-confederate-flag-on-her-lawn-after-getting-overnight-death-threats-since-election-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">president of the Alachua County chapter of the NAACP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The head of a Florida chapter of the NAACP found a Confederate flag on her lawn after receiving a series of late-night death threats from callers claiming ties to the Ku Klux Klan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Evelyn Foxx woke up Monday morning to go for a walk with her friend, and found the flag lying outside in front of her home, reported The Gainesville Sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The 66-year-old Foxx, chapter president of the Alachua County NAACP, and her friend at first thought it was an American flag and walked over to pick it up \u2014 but they called police after realizing it was a Confederate battle flag.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While a piece of cloth may seem tame next to guns and bombs and even ropes, we should consider this in the context of the phone calls she has been receiving since November\u00a0 &#8211; in fact, since the election.\u00a0 They usually come around one or two in the morning, and the callers say they are members of the KKK &#8211; and the calls are death threats.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d call the police too.\u00a0 And the FBI, which she also did.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;d have much faith in them, in Florida, even if my BFF was married to a County Commissioner, as is the case\u00a0with Ms. Foxx.\u00a0 Commissioner Robert Hutchinson ised his Facebook page to call attention to the incident and to state, <em>&#8220;There should be no doubt about the Confederate battle flag\u2019s usage as a symbol of divisiveness, bigotry, and hatred, or that racists live among us who still cling nostalgically to their culture of tyranny and intimidation.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Tisiphone<\/span><\/strong>, Please help.\u00a0 Let us know what you need from us.<\/p>\n<p>Living as we are under a regime such that many of us say at least daily, &#8220;How the <strong>he**<\/strong> did we get <strong>HERE<\/strong>?&#8221;, it may help to pay a bit of attention to others who are asking more specific questions designed to elicit essentially the same information.\u00a0 Such a one is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truth-out.org\/news\/item\/41097-what-will-it-take-for-americans-to-understand-the-basics-of-election-integrity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ernest A. Canning, who writes for The BRAD BLOG<\/a>, and one of whose articles has been picked up by truthout.\u00a0 The title of the article is &#8220;What Will It Take for Americans to Understand the Basics of Election Integrity?&#8221;\u00a0 Seems to me a darned good question.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-28490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/election-300x296.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/election.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/election-150x148.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/election-96x96.jpg 96w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/election-24x24.jpg 24w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/election-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/election-48x48.jpg 48w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/election-64x64.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a brief list:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 ALL electronically stored and\/or processed data are vulnerable to malicious cyber intrusions.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Vulnerability is not confined to external hackers.\u00a0 Election insider manipulation is a separate vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Paper registration forms, poll books, and hand marked paper ballots are not vulnerable to electronic manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 The only way to ensure a transparent and verifiable count is to deploy hand-marked paper ballots, publicly hand counted.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 The core issue of election integrity is not fraud, but whether election officials have complied with procedures designed to ensure integrity.<\/p>\n<p>He goes on to discuss some court cases in disputed elections, and how, in his opinion, the court have not just been looking at the evidence wrongly, but have been looking at the wrong kind of evidence.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t go into detail on this, except to say in passing that it helps no one to discuss what went wrong with a candidate&#8217;s platform or personability and how a different plank, or a different candidate, might have changed the result, when the fact is we really don&#8217;t even know the result.<\/p>\n<p>As a former election judge (poll worker) who has actually counted paper ballots (including once a judge of absentee votes &#8211;
