{"id":26913,"date":"2017-03-25T10:18:45","date_gmt":"2017-03-25T17:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=26913"},"modified":"2017-03-25T10:18:45","modified_gmt":"2017-03-25T17:18:45","slug":"everyday-erinyes-67","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2017\/03\/25\/everyday-erinyes-67\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyday Erinyes #67"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage.&nbsp; These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that.&nbsp; Even though there are many more which I can&#39;t include.&nbsp; As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(178, 34, 34);\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><strong>Alecto<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">, <\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(178, 34, 34);\">Megaera<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">, and <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(178, 34, 34);\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><strong>Tisiphone<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">. These roughly translate as &quot;unceasing,&quot; &quot;grudging,&quot; and &quot;vengeful destruction.&quot;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">I assume everyone has heard of <a href=\"http:\/\/fair.org\/home\/black-man-stabbed-to-death-by-white-supremacist-then-smeared-by-media\/\" target=\"_blank\">the white supremacist who took a bus to New York City <\/a>for the express purpose<\/span><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-26931\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Caughman-300x213.jpg\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Caughman-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Caughman-150x106.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Caughman.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"> of killing one or more black men, and who did in fact kill one, Timothy Caughman, by stabbing, in the &quot;Hell&#39;s Kitchen&quot; neighborhood, with a short sword.&nbsp; The white supremacist then apparently turned himself in, asking to be arrested lest he kill again.&nbsp; In a nation where we are still arguing about whether Michael Brown deserved to die (spoiler: he didn&#39;t.&nbsp; At least, not if you are an actual human being with a grain of empathy), it probably will not be a surprise that the reporting of this incident in the MSM left something to be desired.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">FAIR.org (the acronym stands for Fairness &amp; Accuracy In Reporting) addresses that poor reporting in the linked article.&nbsp; OK, I grant you it&#39;s easy to pick on the New York Daily News &#8211; for one thing, it has <em>&quot;<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><em>a history of smearing black suspects simply on the say-so of the NYPD.&quot;<\/em>&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">But, even so, Mr. Caughman was not a suspect; he was the VICTIM, for heaven&#39;s sake.&nbsp; What does ANY prior record have to do with the story?&nbsp; He was not stabbed to death because of his record; he was stabbed to death because he was black.&nbsp; The stabber said so.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Coughman <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">[sic]<\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> lived in transitional housing on West 36th Street that serves people with HIV\/AIDS. Praxis Housing Initiatives holds a contract with the city. He has 11 prior arrests, including for marijuana, assault, resisting arrest and menacing.&nbsp; <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">Just for the records, the &quot;transitional housing&quot; is transitional NOW, but Caughman had lived there for twenty years.&nbsp; That&#39;s hardly &quot;transitional.&quot;&nbsp; And, of course, anywhere between one and eleven of the eleven prior arrests could easily have been in reality for walking whie black or breathing while black.&nbsp; No attempt seems to have been made to determine whether any arrests led to charges, let alone (gasp!) conviction.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">As bad as the News reporting is, the New York Post managed to go one better, turning &quot;<strong>eleven prior arrests<\/strong>&quot; into &quot;<strong>careeer criminal<\/strong>.&quot;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2017\/03\/11-things-corporate-media-wont-tell-you-about-timothy-caughman-the-unarmed-black-man-stabbed-to-death-by-a-white-supremacist\/\" target=\"_blank\">Katie Halper, writing for Raw Story<\/a>, took the trouble to look up Caughman&#39;s Twitter account.&nbsp; Yes, he has one.&nbsp; Yes, he supported himself by gathering and redeeming bottles and cans, but he was literate, and perceptive, by his tweets.&nbsp; He loved America.&nbsp; He loved the Obamas.&nbsp; He &#8211; well, he didn&#39;t exactly love Donald John Trump.&nbsp; He tweeted about art, and about BLack History Month.&nbsp; You can go to the link to read these tweets, or, if you are on Twitter, his name there is @timrock715.&nbsp; <strong>Was<\/strong> @timrock715.&nbsp; The stream is so vibrant, I forgot for a second.&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(178, 34, 34);\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><strong>Megaera<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">,&nbsp;I think grudgingness is going on here.&nbsp; If that&#39;s a word.&nbsp; I&#39;m sure you understand.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-26927\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Watson-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Watson-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Watson-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Watson-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Watson.jpg 915w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">I&#39;m sure everyone also remembers the Saffron Stalin&#39;s second attempt at a Muslim Ban, which was issued on Ash Wednesday, and blocked the same day, just before it actually went into effect, by U. S. District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2017\/3\/23\/1646572\/-Judge-who-blocked-Muslim-ban-is-receiving-death-threats-and-receiving-24-hour-protection\" target=\"_blank\">Is is a surprise that this patriot and national hero is receiving death threats?<\/a>&nbsp; Surely not.&nbsp; The size of the threat, measured by the response to it, may, however lift an eyebrow or two.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">The U. S.
