{"id":26475,"date":"2017-02-24T14:02:19","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T22:02:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=26475"},"modified":"2017-02-24T14:02:19","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24T22:02:19","slug":"rancid-interference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2017\/02\/24\/rancid-interference\/","title":{"rendered":"Rancid Interference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\"><font color=\"#0000ff\">By rule,<\/font> the White House may not interfere with DOJ investigations, including those conducted by the FBI.&#160; This is especially true if the investigation involves the Resident, given the absence of a President, or any of his staff or associates.&#160; Therefore, it&#8217;s most inappropriate that Trump&#8217;s Chief of Staff, Rancid Reince Priebus, tried to interfere with the FBI&#8217;s investigation of the many documented contacts between Trump&#8217;s campaign and Russian Intelligence.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font color=\"#0066cc\" face=\"Arial\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"republican-lies\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"republican-lies\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/republican-lies.jpg\" width=\"360\" align=\"left\" height=\"360\" \/>Last week<\/font><\/font><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><font face=\"Arial\"> the <span><em>New York Times<\/em><\/span> reported that members of Donald Trump&#8217;s campaign staff &quot;had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election. The White House vigorously denies this, and Chief of Staff Reince Priebus went on TV to knock down the story. That&#8217;s fine. But it turns out Priebus did more than that. According to CNN, Priebus asked the FBI to <\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/02\/23\/politics\/fbi-refused-white-house-request-to-knock-down-recent-trump-russia-stories\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">tell reporters that there was nothing to the story:<\/a><font face=\"Arial\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\" color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The discussions between the White House and the bureau began with FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe<span style=\"vertical-align: super\">1<\/span> and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus on the sidelines of a separate White House meeting the day after the stories were published, according to a U.S. law enforcement official.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#8230;.[A] White House official said that Priebus later reached out again to McCabe and to FBI Director James Comey <span><strong>asking for the FBI to at least talk to reporters on background to dispute the stories.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"vertical-align: super\">2<\/span> A law enforcement official says McCabe didn&#8217;t discuss aspects of the case but wouldn&#8217;t say exactly what McCabe told Priebus.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Arial\"><span><strong><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Comey rejected the request for the FBI to comment on the stories,<\/font><\/strong><\/span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"> according to sources, because the alleged communications between Trump associates and Russians known to US intelligence are the subject of an ongoing investigation.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">I wonder if anyone in the Trump White House even understands how inappropriate this is?&#8230; [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/kevin-drum\/2017\/02\/white-house-asks-fbi-assure-reporters-theres-nothing-russia-story-they-refuse\" target=\"_blank\">Mother Jones<\/a>&gt;<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Mother has much more.&#160; Click through.&#160; to answer the author&#8217;s last question, I have no doubt that Priebus knows how inappropriate it is.
