{"id":25526,"date":"2016-12-20T12:26:08","date_gmt":"2016-12-20T20:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=25526"},"modified":"2016-12-20T12:26:08","modified_gmt":"2016-12-20T20:26:08","slug":"a-college-grade-of-f","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2016\/12\/20\/a-college-grade-of-f\/","title":{"rendered":"A College Grade of F-"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I Trust you understand that the Electoral College had two functions in our former Republic.&#160; The first is to certify the election of the voters&#8217; choice for President.&#160; The second is to act as a hedge against the certification os a President who is unfit for office, especially one in thrall to a foreign power.&#160; In both cases, the Electoral College has failed miserably.&#160; We can and must abolish the Electoral College.&#160; The term Manchurian Candidate is now officially an anachronism.&#160; Our Electoral College is certifying a Siberian Candidate.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"1221ElectoralCollege\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" border=\"0\" alt=\"1221ElectoralCollege\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1221ElectoralCollege.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpopularvote.com\/polls\" target=\"_blank\">By overwhelming majorities<\/a>, Americans would prefer to elect the president by direct popular vote, not filtered through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/18\/us\/politics\/the-electoral-college-meets-monday-heres-what-to-expect.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">antiquated mechanism<\/a> of the Electoral College. They understand, on a gut level, the basic fairness of awarding the nation\u2019s highest office on the same basis as every other elected office \u2014 to the person who gets the most votes.<\/p>\n<p>But for now, the presidency is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/18\/us\/politics\/the-electoral-college-meets-monday-heres-what-to-expect.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">decided by 538 electors<\/a>. And on Monday, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/05\/opinion\/why-i-will-not-cast-my-electoral-vote-for-donald-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\">much talk in recent weeks<\/a> about urging those electors to block Donald Trump from the White House, a majority did as expected and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/19\/us\/politics\/electoral-college-vote.html?action=Click&amp;contentCollection=BreakingNews&amp;contentID=64677786&amp;pgtype=article\" target=\"_blank\">cast their ballots for him<\/a> \u2014 a result Congress will ratify next month.<\/p>\n<p>And so for the second time in 16 years, the candidate who lost the popular vote has won the presidency. Unlike 2000, it wasn\u2019t even close. <strong>Hillary Clinton beat Mr. Trump by more than 2.8 million votes, or 2.1 percent of the electorate.
