{"id":25313,"date":"2016-12-11T11:54:07","date_gmt":"2016-12-11T19:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=25313"},"modified":"2016-12-11T11:54:07","modified_gmt":"2016-12-11T19:54:07","slug":"the-house-gop-just-revealed-its-plan-to-cut-social-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2016\/12\/11\/the-house-gop-just-revealed-its-plan-to-cut-social-security\/","title":{"rendered":"The House GOP Just Revealed Its Plan to Cut Social Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">If you read the monthly reports, you will find that Politics Plus readers tend to be older, poor, and more female that male (although of course both are represented.)&nbsp; Those of us living in the Unitd States who fit that description are probably living mostly or totally on the earned benefits of Social Security.&nbsp; I know I am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">So I thought that the content of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/contributor\/2016\/12\/republicans-want-to-cut-social-security\" target=\"_blank\">this article from Mother Jones <\/a>should be posted to Politics Plus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25350\" height=\"268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/socsec1-300x268.gif\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/socsec1-300x268.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/socsec1-150x134.gif 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">Now, it&#39;s nothing new that Republicans want to cut Social Security (or should I say gut Social Security?)&nbsp; That has been true since it was created in 1935.&nbsp; But usually, when government programs are cut that people depend on, current recipients at least are &quot;grandfathered&quot; in so that the cuts will apply to future beneficiaries.&nbsp; Well, that&#39;s not exactly true of this bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">The Mother Jones article includes the complete first draft of the bill, but also refers to <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/edblog\/going-for-the-big-enchilada\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo<\/a>, from whom I&#39;d like to quote:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">[<\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Y]ou&#39;re out of luck even if you&#39;re a current beneficiary&#8230;.&nbsp; [R]eviewing the summary of the GOP bill, keep the following in mind. If you&#39;ve been working for any number of years, but especially if you&#39;ve been working for two or three decades, you&#39;ve been paying in not only money for current beneficiaries but additional money which was invested in US government bonds to make it possible for Social Security to pay benefits of Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers&#8230;.&nbsp; This plan appears to foresee the government never paying that back to Social Security. In other words, <span style=\"color: rgb(178, 34, 34);\"><strong>your payroll taxes have been socking away additional money to cover the growing senior population. But this bill says too bad. That money goes for high income tax cuts.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.democraticleader.gov\/newsroom\/12916\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Pelosi <\/a>had this to say:&nbsp; <span style=\"color: rgb(0, 128, 128);\">&quot;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 128, 128);\"><em><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Apparently nothing upsets House Republicans like the idea of hard-working people getting to enjoy a secure and dignified retirement<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 128, 128);\">.&quot;<\/span>&nbsp; Yes, she went into more detail, but that sums it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,serif;\">Even <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/gop-introduces-plan-to-massively-cut-social-security-222200857.html\" target=\"_blank\">Yahoo! Finance<\/a> has a scary article:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">The bill introduced by Johnson, who was recently acting Chair of the Ways and Means <\/span><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25349\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/fdr-300x214.jpg\" width=\"300\" \/><em><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">committee, slashes benefits, adds means testing, and would raise the retirement age from 67 to 69.&nbsp; <strong><span style=\"color: rgb(178, 34, 34);\">For most workers, the bill would cut Social Security benefits substantially<\/span><\/strong>.
