{"id":2502,"date":"2010-08-08T01:22:18","date_gmt":"2010-08-08T08:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=2502"},"modified":"2010-08-08T01:22:18","modified_gmt":"2010-08-08T08:22:18","slug":"action-alert-tell-obama-to-ignore-dodd-appoint-warren","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/08\/08\/action-alert-tell-obama-to-ignore-dodd-appoint-warren\/","title":{"rendered":"Action Alert: Tell Obama to Ignore Dodd, Appoint Warren"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Most of the problems in the recently passed financial reform bill resulted form Chris Dodd pandering to Republicans.&#160; It would have been far weaker than it turned out, had not more progressive Democrats amended Dodd\u2019s version on the floor before passage.&#160; Dodd is caving in again, advising against the appointment of Elizabeth Warren as head of the CFPB.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/8warren.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 0px 5px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"8warren\" border=\"0\" alt=\"8warren\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/8warren_thumb.jpg\" width=\"163\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a> When it first looked like Harvard Law professor Elizabeth Warren might stand a serious chance of getting appointed at the first director of the newly-created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau \u2014 a regulatory agency which she was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracyjournal.org\/article2.php?ID=6528&amp;limit=3000&amp;limit2=4500&amp;page=3\" target=\"_blank\">the first to suggest<\/a> \u2014 Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) poo-pooed the notion, saying there\u2019s a \u201cserious question\u201d about whether Warren is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/news\/2010-07-20\/warren-may-lack-votes-for-consumer-agency-dodd-says.html\" target=\"_blank\">confirmable<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">The New Republic\u2019s Noam Scheiber wrote that \u201cafter surveying a dozen insiders over the last few days \u2014 congressional aides, industry officials, progressive activists, and a few administration officials \u2014 I\u2019ve concluded that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/article\/politics\/76570\/why-elizabeth-warren-will-likely-be-confirmed\" target=\"_blank\">odds are good that Warren would be confirmed<\/a> if nominated by the White House.\u201d And Dodd now seems to have shifted his rhetoric, saying that even if Warren is confirmable, <a href=\"http:\/\/noir.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=newsarchive&amp;sid=amDsNpOgkCw8\" target=\"_blank\">it\u2019s not worth a potential fight<\/a> to get her the job:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: bold\">What you don\u2019t need to have is an eight-month battle for who the director or the head or chairperson of this new consumer financial protection bureau will be.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">Watch it: <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">&#160;<object width=\"500\" height=\"405\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/sab3ZZn4c6k&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?rel=0&amp;color1=0x006699&amp;color2=0x54abd6&amp;border=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/sab3ZZn4c6k&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?rel=0&amp;color1=0x006699&amp;color2=0x54abd6&amp;border=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"500\" height=\"405\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">Dodd pretty clearly would prefer that current Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chair Shelia Bair receive the nod, but Bair has said that she\u2019s not interested in the job. \u201cI did some checking on Sheila Bair and I was going to have <a href=\"http:\/\/noir.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=newsarchive&amp;sid=amDsNpOgkCw8\" target=\"_blank\">very little difficulty getting Sheila Bair confirmed<\/a>,\u201d said Dodd. \u201cI\u2019d probably confirm her in a couple of days. That\u2019s how strongly people felt, Democrats and Republicans.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">Bair certainly has the credentials to do the job, as she was one of the first federal officials <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/12\/18\/business\/18subprime.html\" target=\"_blank\">warning about the proliferation of subprime loans<\/a> during the buildup of the housing bubble. But she\u2019s doing very important work at the FDIC, and as The Wonk Room explains, there\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/07\/20\/warren-fit\/\" target=\"_blank\">simply no reason<\/a> for passing over Warren. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">Leaving aside Warren\u2019s qualifications, it makes little sense that Dodd feels a political fight here isn\u2019t worth it.
