{"id":2460,"date":"2010-08-05T01:14:39","date_gmt":"2010-08-05T08:14:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=2460"},"modified":"2010-08-05T01:14:39","modified_gmt":"2010-08-05T08:14:39","slug":"what-is-michael-steele-plotting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/08\/05\/what-is-michael-steele-plotting\/","title":{"rendered":"What Is Michael Steele Plotting?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Interns of RNC Chairman, Michael Steele, have been emailing foreign embassies trying to sat up appointments for Steele with the Ambassadors.&#160; On the surface, this appears to be another bonehead move.&#160; Is it, or is Steele up to something?<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/5steele.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 10px 5px 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"5steele\" border=\"0\" alt=\"5steele\" align=\"left\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/5steele_thumb.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a> The Republican National Committee is trying to set up meetings between Chairman Michael Steele and foreign ambassadors to the United States, according to an e-mail obtained by POLITICO \u2014 an effort that has puzzled diplomats as well as fellow Republicans. <\/p>\n<p>An RNC intern sent a message late last month to at least one ambassador on behalf of Neil Alpert, a senior finance aide, with little explanation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you know, the November election is just 103 days away and the chairman would like to extend to you an invitation to sit down either at the RNC or at your embassy to discuss the upcoming 2010 midterm elections,\u201d wrote Christopher Kelleher, a finance department intern. \u201cWith literally hundreds of congressional seats up for grabs in just under four months, Chairman Steel [sic] would love to have the opportunity to discuss the party&#8217;s outlook with you.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>RNC spokesman Doug Heye declined to comment on why Steele would want to set up individual meetings with the foreign diplomats<\/strong>, whether he\u2019s had any meetings with them, and if he would continue to pursue such get-togethers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn his role as RNC chairman, he meets with leaders in Washington and throughout the country,\u201d Heye said. <\/p>\n<p>But one European embassy official told POLITICO his embassy had received the generic-sounding message in a general inquiry in-box and indicated that he didn\u2019t know what to make of the note. <\/p>\n<p>The staffs of high-level American political figures typically go directly to an embassy\u2019s political officer to set up meetings with an ambassador. <\/p>\n<p>Steele\u2019s outreach to foreign representatives heading into the final stretch of the midterm election cycle is <strong>exasperating senior Republicans<\/strong>, already fed up with the controversial chairman\u2019s knack for bad publicity. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>They can\u2019t give any money and they can\u2019t vote<\/strong>,\u201d former RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson said, referring to the ambassadors. \u201cI don\u2019t know why you\u2019d take time to do it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>It is illegal for foreign nationals to contribute to American candidates or political parties<\/strong>&#8230; [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0710\/40344.html\" target=\"_blank\">Politico<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">On first read, I found this quite puzzling.&#160; Sure, Steele is notorious for idiocy, but this one seemed without purpose.&#160; So I asked myself, what does the RNC want?&#160; The answer is obvious: the <em>$ame thing the RNC alway$ want$<\/em>.&#160; But foreign nationals can\u2019t contribute.&#160; Then it hit me! :idea:&#160; Thanks to <em>Citizens United<\/em>, foreign corporations can buy advertising and can even do so anonymously.&#160; There is nothing to stop a foreign government from subsidizing a foreign corporation\u2019s ad campaign.&#160; Steele and the Republicans want to sell out to foreign governments through their corporations.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interns of RNC Chairman, Michael Steele, have been emailing foreign embassies trying to sat up appointments for Steele with the Ambassadors.&#160; On the surface, this appears to be another bonehead move.&#160; Is it, or is Steele up to something?
