{"id":246,"date":"2009-11-12T02:50:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-12T10:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=246"},"modified":"2009-11-12T02:50:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-12T10:50:00","slug":"obama-wants-new-options-for-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2009\/11\/12\/obama-wants-new-options-for-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama Wants New Options for Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a surprise development, President Barack Obama appears to have rejected all the options offered him by his national security team and wants more options before he decides.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/s217.photobucket.com\/albums\/cc83\/TomCat1948or2\/Blog%202009\/ObamaWantsNewOptionsforAfghanistan_2456\/afghanistan.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"afghanistan\" style=\"border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; border-right-width: 0px\" height=\"341\" alt=\"afghanistan\" src=\"http:\/\/s217.photobucket.com\/albums\/cc83\/TomCat1948or2\/Blog%202009\/ObamaWantsNewOptionsforAfghanistan_2456\/afghanistan_thumb.jpg\" width=\"404\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> A senior White House official says U.S. President Barack Obama is calling on his national security team to revise the options for the U.S. war strategy in Afghanistan.&#160; <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">Mr. Obama asked for the revisions Wednesday during the latest review of his Afghanistan policy.&#160; The official says <strong>the president wants his advisors to determine how and when U.S. troops can hand over security responsibility to the government in Kabul<\/strong>.&#160; Administration officials say Mr. Obama wants to make clear to Afghan President Hamid Karzai that <strong>the U.S. commitment in Afghanistan is not &quot;open-ended.&quot; <\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">The president&#8217;s call for revisions comes as the <strong>U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl Eikenberry, has expressed serious reservations about sending additional troops to the country<\/strong>.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">Officials say Eikenberry sent two classified cables to Washington last week expressing doubts about Mr. Karzai&#8217;s leadership.&#160; The Afghan president has been blamed for allowing <strong>rampant corruption<\/strong> under his watch.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">Eikenberry served as the commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan in 2006 and 2007.&#160; He became ambassador to Afghanistan earlier this year after retiring from the military.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">His position puts him in stark opposition to General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, who has requested 40,000 more troops.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">The United States already has about 63,000 troops in Afghanistan\u2026 [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/english\/2009-11-12-voa3.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Voice of America<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p>This is the first good news that Obama might be bucking the the flawed escalation policy of Stanley McChrystal, infamous for his role in the Pat Tillman cover-up.&#160; Let\u2019s hope that he actually wants a viable exit strategy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a surprise development, President Barack Obama appears to have rejected all the options offered him by his national security team and wants more options before he decides.
