{"id":237,"date":"2009-11-10T02:58:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-10T10:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=237"},"modified":"2009-11-10T02:58:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-10T10:58:00","slug":"obama-objects-to-stupak-pitts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2009\/11\/10\/obama-objects-to-stupak-pitts\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama Objects to Stupak-Pitts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barack Obama finally made his feelings clear on this.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/s217.photobucket.com\/albums\/cc83\/TomCat1948or2\/Blog%202009\/ObamaObjectstoStupakPitts_2908\/ProChoice.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"ProChoice\" style=\"border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-right-width: 0px\" height=\"244\" alt=\"ProChoice\" src=\"http:\/\/s217.photobucket.com\/albums\/cc83\/TomCat1948or2\/Blog%202009\/ObamaObjectstoStupakPitts_2908\/ProChoice_thumb.jpg\" width=\"185\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> President Obama suggested Monday that he was not comfortable with abortion restrictions inserted into the House version of major health care legislation, and he prodded Congress to revise them.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">\u201cThere needs to be some more work before we get to the point where we\u2019re not changing the status quo\u201d on abortion, Mr. Obama said in an interview with ABC News. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the goal.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">On the one hand, Mr. Obama said, \u201cwe\u2019re not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">On the other hand, he said, <strong>he wanted to make sure \u201cwe\u2019re not restricting women\u2019s insurance choices,\u201d because he had promised that \u201cif you\u2019re happy and satisfied with the insurance that you have, it\u2019s not going to change.\u201d<\/strong> <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">Before passing its health bill on Saturday, the House adopted an amendment that would block the use of federal money for \u201cany health plan that includes coverage of abortion,\u201d except in the case of rape or incest or if the life of a pregnant woman is in danger.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">Some private insurance now covers abortion. Under the bill, most private insurers would receive federal subsidies on behalf of low- and middle-income people.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\">The Senate is working on its own version of health legislation&#8230; [<em>emphasis added<\/em>]<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/11\/10\/health\/policy\/10health.html\" target=\"_blank\">NY Times<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p>At least one of you apparently misunderstood me on this issue a couple days ago, so please allow me to clarify.&#160; My personal belief that abortion is wrong is a belief I apply only to myself.&#160; I do not have the right to impose it on anyone else, and I oppose any attempts on the part of others to do so.&#160; I am fully committed to a woman\u2019s right to make her own health care decisions, including the right to choose abortion.&#160; If I disagree with her choice, so what?&#160; God did not put me in charge of anyone else\u2019s decisions.&#160; Therefore, I am pro-choice.<\/p>\n<p>I do, however, disagree with Obama on one thing.&#160; Even the Hyde Amendment violates women\u2019s rights.&#160; Simply stated, Hyde forbids federal funds being spent on abortion on the premise that people should not have to fund practices to which they are morally opposed with their tax dollars.&#160; That premise is flawed.&#160; If it is not, would the government please refund to me every penny I paid in taxes spent on every war in which the US has engaged from Vietnam until today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barack Obama finally made his feelings clear on this.
