{"id":22696,"date":"2016-06-30T23:23:58","date_gmt":"2016-07-01T06:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=22696"},"modified":"2016-06-30T23:23:58","modified_gmt":"2016-07-01T06:23:58","slug":"squatchs-open-thread-30062016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2016\/06\/30\/squatchs-open-thread-30062016\/","title":{"rendered":"Squatch&#8217;s Open Thread &#8212; 30\/06\/2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Well it has been a busy day&nbsp; . . . mostly spent slaving over a hot keyboard with this and two other articles,&nbsp; I haven&#39;t even done TC&#39;s Open Thread yet.&nbsp; I did manage to get out to pick up my new cell phone so I&#39;ll have to spend some time getting accustomed to it.&nbsp; Tomorrow is Canada Day and I am staying low.&nbsp; It may rain anyway, but I have a few urgent matters requiring my attention.&nbsp; Lucia will be out with her kids so no teaching tomorrow.&nbsp; A nice rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Short Takes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2016\/06\/30\/3794271\/science-groups-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Think Progress<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;&#8212; In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/images\/2016climateletter6-28-16.pdf\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">blunt letter<\/font><\/a> to Congress, 31 leading scientific societies reaffirmed the reality that humans are causing climate change and only we can stop it. &ldquo;To reduce the risk of the most severe impacts of climate change, greenhouse gas emissions must be substantially reduced,&rdquo; they write.&nbsp; &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But as long as the media still gives <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/climate\/2016\/06\/09\/3786515\/media-trump-racism-climate-denial\/\"><font color=\"#0066cc\">presidential candidates<\/font><\/a> (and pretty much every other major politician) a free pass on this most preventable of existential threats to America, scientists will have to keep &ldquo;reminding&rdquo; policymakers of the broad scientific understanding about human-caused climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"featured-image\" height=\"798\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/29162917\/shutterstock_98702825-1024x798.jpg\" width=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring, and rigorous scientific research concludes that the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are the primary driver,&rdquo; explain the 31 scientific groups. &ldquo;This conclusion is based on multiple independent lines of evidence and the vast body of peer-reviewed science.&#39;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">I guess the old adage &quot;give until it hurts&quot; applies here.&nbsp; Certainly the Republican dominated (for now!)
