{"id":22311,"date":"2016-06-08T14:40:35","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T21:40:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=22311"},"modified":"2016-06-08T14:40:35","modified_gmt":"2016-06-08T21:40:35","slug":"time-to-suspend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2016\/06\/08\/time-to-suspend\/","title":{"rendered":"Time to Suspend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I am most proud to be a Bernie Sanders supporter.&#160; I have been since the moment I learned he was a candidate.&#160; However, the only way Bernie could win now, barring some extraordinary event, would require the Superdelegates to override the expressed will of Democratic voters, who chose Hillary Clinton through a majority of pledged delegates and through a difference of over 3,600,000 votes.&#160; That will not, and should not happen.&#160; Some of Bernie&#8217;s most prominent supporters agree.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Merkley\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Merkley\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Merkley.jpg\" width=\"320\" align=\"left\" height=\"406\" \/>Bernie Sanders has <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/sanders-heading-convention-clinton-snags-delegates-ca-nj\/story?id=39491735\" target=\"_blank\">vowed<\/a> for months to take the Democratic primary fight all the way to the convention, regardless of the results from the final states.<\/p>\n<p>Whether he&#8217;ll actually follow through on that pledge has been the source of nearly endless speculation. Sanders <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/6\/8\/11881402\/bernie-sanders-staying-in-presidential-race\">did not concede<\/a> the nomination after suffering a string of defeats last night \u2014 Hillary Clinton declared victory after winning New Jersey \u2014 and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/06\/bernie-sanders-campaign-last-days-224041\" target=\"_blank\">profile from Politico<\/a> suggested he&#8217;s personally determined to contest the inevitable until the bitter end.<\/p>\n<p>What could help change his mind? On Wednesday, the Washington Post&#8217;s Greg Sargent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/plum-line\/wp\/2016\/06\/08\/top-supporters-of-bernie-sanders-gently-tell-him-its-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that two key Sanders allies \u2014 Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley and Arizona Rep. Ra\u00fal Grijalva \u2014 are now publicly recognizing that Sanders &quot;would have to accept the inevitability&quot; of Clinton&#8217;s victory now that all paths to the nomination have been sealed off&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">From &lt;<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/6\/8\/11882668\/two-bernie-sanders-allies\" target=\"_blank\">Vox<\/a><font color=\"#0000ff\"><\/font><font color=\"#0000ff\">&gt;<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Jeff&#8217;s opinion means a lot to me, considering that I worked to get him elected.&#160; He is the only Senator that had the courage to endorse Bernie.&#160; Jeff and Raul aren&#8217;t the only ones.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"0608MoveOn\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"0608MoveOn\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/0608MoveOn.jpg\" width=\"360\" align=\"right\" height=\"218\" \/>One of the largest advocacy groups to endorse Bernie Sanders on Wednesday gently nudged the Vermont senator toward the exit, arguing that the Democratic nomination can&#8217;t be won on the backs of &quot;undemocratic superdelegates.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The liberal group MoveOn.org suggested in a <a href=\"http:\/\/front.moveon.org\/moveon-statement-on-democratic-primary\/#.V1g6yZMrJ7M\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> that Hillary Clinton fairly earned the Democratic nomination after Tuesday&#8217;s primaries by clinching a majority of pledged delegates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoveOn members believe, as we have long advocated, that the nomination should go to the winner of the majority of pledged delegates, and that undemocratic superdelegates should not overturn the will of the voters,\u201d MoveOn Political Action&#8217;s Executive Director, Ilya Sheyman, said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders <a href=\"http:\/\/front.moveon.org\/sanders-endorsement-release\/#.V1g9f5MrJ7M\" target=\"_blank\">won MoveOn&#8217;s endorsement<\/a> in January with over 78 percent of the 340,665 votes cast by the group&#8217;s members&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">From &lt;<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/moveon-sanders-undemocratic-superdelegates?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+tpm-news+%28TPMNews%29\" target=\"_blank\">TPM<\/a><font color=\"#0000ff\"><\/font><font color=\"#0000ff\">&gt;<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I&#8217;m a MoveOn member and supporter, and I agree.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"0608Cenk\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"0608Cenk\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/0608Cenk.jpg\" width=\"360\" align=\"left\" height=\"194\" \/>The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur has been one of the most visible and vocal supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and his bid for the Democratic nomination.<\/p>\n<p>But on Tuesday night, Uygur urged Sanders to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/big-bernie-backer-cenk-uygur-calls-on-bernie-sanders-to-suspend-his-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\">suspend his campaign<\/a> in light of the fact that his rival, Hillary Clinton, has secured the delegates needed to cinch the party\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I was Bernie Sanders, I would suspend the campaign,\u201d Uygur said. \u201cAnd so now Sanders supporters, before you freak out, here\u2019s what it means. It doesn\u2019t mean that I take all my delegates and I give them to Hillary Clinton preemptively\u2026 In this case it would be a literal suspension of the campaign. \u2018I am not going to continue to run against Hillary Clinton because there aren\u2019t any elections left other than the super delegate election at the convention.
