Bobby Jindal (R) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.state.la.us\/index.cfm?md=newsroom&amp;tmp=detail&amp;articleID=2309\" target=\"_blank\">signed<\/a> a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.la.us\/billdata\/streamdocument.asp?did=719548\" target=\"_blank\">bill<\/a> into law that will allow people to bring concealed weapons into houses of worship. The Times-Picayune <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2010\/07\/gov_bobby_jindal_signs_bills_a.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> on the bill: <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">[State Rep. Henry] Burns\u2019 bill would <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">authorize persons who qualified to carry concealed weapons having passed the training and background checks to bring them to churches, mosques, synagogues or other houses of worship as part of a security force<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">The pastor or head of the religious institution must announce verbally or in weekly newsletters or bulletins that there will be individuals armed on the property as members of he security force. <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Those chosen have to undergo eight hours of tactical training each year.<\/span> [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">The bill also allows a house of worship to hire off-duty police or security guards to protect congregants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">Burns said that he proposed the bill so that religious institutions in \u201cdeclining neighborhoods\u201d can have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wxvt.com\/Global\/story.asp?S=12763576\" target=\"_blank\">extra protection against crime<\/a>. \u201cI was born and raised with Mayberry, riding my bicycle any time of the day or night,\u201d said Burns. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.2theadvocate.com\/news\/95927939.html\" target=\"_blank\">But we live in different times<\/a>.\u201d To be clear, however, houses of worship can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.la.us\/billdata\/streamdocument.asp?did=719548\">authorize<\/a> any person to receive a concealed handgun permit after eight hours of training \u2014 whether or not the purpose is to help them fight crime. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: calibri; font-size: 11pt\">Last year, Ken Pagano, pastor of the New Bethel Church in Louisville, KY, invited his congregation to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/nation\/article\/0,8599,1907588,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">bring their firearms to church<\/a>. \u201cGod and guns were part of the foundation of this country,\u201d said Pagano, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t see any contradiction in this\u2026 [<em>emphasis original<\/em>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/07\/07\/guns-church-jindal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Think Progress<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Dang!&#160; I\u2019d hate to be a member of the choir.&#160; Sing off key and BANG!! \ud83d\ude41<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Seriously, I could not worship in an environment where guns are the instrument of God\u2019s love.&#160; This must come from the gospel of GOP Supply-side Jesus, nit the real one.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9pt\"><span style=\"color: #333333\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/8LindaLingle.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 0px 5px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"8LindaLingle\" border=\"0\" alt=\"8LindaLingle\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/8LindaLingle_thumb.jpg\" width=\"75\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> Hawaii\u2019s governor, Republican Linda Lingle, has vetoed a civil unions bill that was passed by the state legislature in April. Her <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20100707\/ap_on_re_us\/us_hawaii_civil_unions?om_rid=DO53Rd&amp;om_mid=_BMNHOJB8N9h3XW&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">reasoning<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333\"> was interesting:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: arial; color: #333333; font-size: 9pt\">Lingle said voters should decide the fate of civil unions, not politicians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: arial; color: #333333; font-size: 9pt\">&quot;The subject of this legislation has touched the hearts and minds of our citizens as no other social issue of our day,&quot; she said. &quot;It would be a mistake to allow a decision of this magnitude to be made by one individual or a small group of elected officials.&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: #333333; font-size: 9pt\">Wait, isn\u2019t that how representative democracy works?\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.pfaw.org\/content\/legislature-passed-civil-unions-bill-not-democratic-enough-says-hawaii-governor\" target=\"_blank\">PFAW<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Her stated reason is a lie.&#160; Were it true, she would have vetoed everything the legislature passed.&#160; The real reason, of course, is that as a GOP bigot, she has no respect for the rights of LGBT people.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt\"><span style=\"color: black\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/teabagthomas.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 0px 5px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"teabag-thomas\" border=\"0\" alt=\"teabag-thomas\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/teabagthomas_thumb.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a> Virginia &quot;Ginni&quot; Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, as a new job, running a think tank she founded to appeal to Tea Party supporters. Liberty Central, according to Kenneth P. Vogel, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0710\/39426.html#ixzz0t2kdhGzl\" target=\"_blank\">writing in <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Politico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\">, &quot;appears to be positioning itself as a hybrid think tank\/advocacy group\/campaign arm for the tea party movement.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 9.75pt\">Thomas herself explained it this way to Human Events magazine, Vogel reports:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: arial; font-size: 9.75pt\"><span style=\"color: black\">\u201cI\u2019m getting to know the Tea Party groups and the new citizen activists,\u201d Thomas <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanevents.com\/article.php?id=37683\" target=\"_blank\">told <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Human Events<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"> late last month. \u201cWhat I think I can bring to the table is a connective (t)issue between the new people and the old people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 9.75pt\">On the Liberty Central Web site, visitors are urged to sign a &quot;pledge to activism&quot; [Teabaggers delinked] that states the organization&#8217;s commitment to small government, saying, in part:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 9.75pt\">In an effort to hold their government accountable to its constitutional limitations, many Americans have voiced their opposition to a \u201cBig Government\u201d agenda through protests and election upsets only to be blatantly ignored by many elected representatives,<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 9.75pt\">Therefore, I pledge to be more informed and more active, and encourage others to do likewise, in order to maximize my impact and influence in preserving, protecting and promoting liberty, freedom, and limited Constitutional government in America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 9.75pt\">Call it the Great Convergence, this coming together of old-guard groups and extremists under the Tea Party brand &#8212; something perhaps that only someone very close to a major power center in the U.S. government could pull off.
