{"id":21506,"date":"2016-04-28T13:35:44","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T20:35:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=21506"},"modified":"2016-04-28T13:35:44","modified_gmt":"2016-04-28T20:35:44","slug":"republican-racist-self-reliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2016\/04\/28\/republican-racist-self-reliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Republican Racist Self-reliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">The more we think of words like hate, hypocrisy, lies and racism, the more the Republican Party comes to mind.&#160; The Republican Racist Dictatorship of Bamastan display their hatred openly, but when challenged, use self-reliance as an excuse to deny their racist hate.&#160; Could there be any truth to their self-reliance claim?&#160; Lets examine the evidence.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"0428confederate\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" border=\"0\" alt=\"0428confederate\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/0428confederate.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"444\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alabama is currently celebrating <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/justice\/2016\/04\/25\/3772371\/alabama-state-workers-get-a-day-off-today-to-celebrate-the-confederacys-treason\/\" target=\"_blank\">Confederate Heritage Month<\/a> with a state-wide holiday and a series of public events aimed at remembering and honoring those who fought on the side of southern, slave-owning states during the Civil War. At one such event this week, organized by the Ladies\u2019 Memorial Association, Alabama\u2019s Secretary of State John Merrill lamented <a href=\"http:\/\/altoday.com\/archives\/4510-jim-zeigler-confederate-items-quietly-returned-to-capitol-museum-shop\" target=\"_blank\">recent calls<\/a> to remove Confederate symbols from government buildings. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next question that has to be asked is so what\u2019s the next thing you are going to do,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montgomeryadvertiser.com\/story\/news\/local\/community\/2016\/04\/26\/merrill-critical-flag-removal-capitol\/83564580\/\" target=\"_blank\">he asked<\/a>, \u201care you going to take a bulldozer to the monument and forget what people fought for to preserve a way of life that makes us special and unique?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Civil rights groups, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/splcenter\/status\/725334056192364545\" target=\"_blank\">slammed the remark<\/a> as \u201cshameful.\u201d But in a follow-up conversation with ThinkProgress, Merrill explained that the \u201cway of life\u201d he celebrates is based on Confederate soldiers\u2019 independent spirit, not their advocacy for slavery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we have things happen in our state, we don\u2019t rely on the federal government to come take care of us,\u201d he said. \u201c<strong>We take care of ourselves. For example, after the tornadoes in 2011, or after the massive flooding we had<\/strong>. That\u2019s who we are. That\u2019s who these people were. I\u2019m proud of that.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Alabama, however, is the <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/blog\/which-states-rely-most-federal-aid\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ninth most reliant<\/strong><\/a><strong> on federal aid out of the 50 states, taking <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2011\/11\/states-federal-taxes-spending-charts-maps\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>far more<\/strong><\/a><strong> in aid than the state pays back in taxes. As for the 2011 tornado damage Merrill mentioned, an auditor <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/tuscaloosa\/index.ssf\/2016\/02\/tuscaloosa_should_return_12_mi.html\"><strong>recently found<\/strong><\/a><strong> that the state improperly received about $1.2 million in federal aid that it now must pay back.
