\"vitter_diapers-1\"<\/a> In 2005, Jamie Leigh Jones\u2019 Halliburton\/KBR co-workers <\/span>gang-raped<\/a> her while she was working in Baghdad. The company then detained her in a shipping container for at least 24 hours without food, water, or a bed, and \u201cwarned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, <\/span>she\u2019d be out of a job<\/a>.\u201d (Jones was not an <\/span>isolated<\/a> <\/span>case<\/a>.) Jones was prevented from bringing charges in court against KBR because her employment contract stipulated that sexual assault allegations would be heard in private arbitration only.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) proposed an <\/span>amendment<\/a> to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill that would withhold defense contracts if companies \u201crestrict their employees from taking workplace <\/span>sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court<\/a>.\u201d Although the amendment passed, <\/span>30 Republican senators voted against it<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the Republicans singled out for <\/span>especially<\/a> <\/span>harsh<\/a> <\/span>criticism<\/a> following the vote was Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), who has a track record of <\/span>siding against<\/a> <\/span>women\u2019s rights<\/a>. The Huffington Post\u2019s Sam Stein reports that at a town hall meeting this past weekend, <\/span>a constituent confronted Vitter about his vote<\/a>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n
