{"id":21412,"date":"2016-04-27T03:05:10","date_gmt":"2016-04-27T10:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=21412"},"modified":"2016-04-27T17:46:35","modified_gmt":"2016-04-28T00:46:35","slug":"from-sea-to-sea-a-mari-usque-ad-mare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2016\/04\/27\/from-sea-to-sea-a-mari-usque-ad-mare\/","title":{"rendered":"From Sea To Sea &#8212; A Mari Usque Ad Mare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">There has been and is so much talk by Drumpf about building a wall, a <span style=\"font-size:72px;\"><em><strong>BIG<\/strong><\/em><\/span> wall, on the US &#8211; Mexico border. &nbsp;Here is John Oliver on Drumpf&#39;s southern wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"695\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vU8dCYocuyI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">And at one time, Scott Walker floated the not so new idea of building a wall on the Canada &#8211; US border, which Drumpf momentarily supported. &nbsp;This 09\/2011 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/2011\/09\/29\/canadian-border-fence_n_986606.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Huffington Post<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"> article should make you wonder. &nbsp;Walker was just the most recent iteration of that&nbsp;debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&quot;The United States is looking at building fences along the border with Canada to help keep out terrorists and other criminals.&quot;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">This is all in support of national security. &nbsp;But I would rather think of it as being in support of national xenophobia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">But what is the Canada &#8211; US border? &nbsp;It really is quite funny and interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&quot;The&nbsp;<b>Canada&ndash;United States border<\/b>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_language\" title=\"French language\">French<\/a>:&nbsp;<i>Fronti&egrave;re entre le Canada et les &Eacute;tats-Unis<\/i>), officially known as the<b>International Boundary<\/b>, is the longest international&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Border\" title=\"Border\">border<\/a>&nbsp;in the world. It is shared between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\" title=\"Canada\">Canada<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_of_America\" title=\"United States of America\">United States of America<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_by_area\" title=\"List of countries by area\">second and fourth largest<\/a>&nbsp;countries by area respectively. The terrestrial boundary (including small portions of maritime boundaries on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_Ocean\" title=\"Atlantic Ocean\">Atlantic<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_Ocean\" title=\"Pacific Ocean\">Pacific<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arctic_Ocean\" title=\"Arctic Ocean\">Arctic<\/a>&nbsp;coasts, as well as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Lakes\" title=\"Great Lakes\">Great Lakes<\/a>) is 8,891 kilometres (5,525&nbsp;mi) long, of which 2,475 kilometres (1,538&nbsp;mi) is with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alaska\" title=\"Alaska\">Alaska<\/a>.&quot; &nbsp;&#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada%E2%80%93United_States_border\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"695\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qMkYlIA7mgw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The line between Canada and the United States is&nbsp;renowned for being the longest undefended border&nbsp;in the world but, as Canadian photographer Andreas Rutkauskas discovered on an epic road trip, there&#39;s more to it than meets the eye. &nbsp;<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><strong>&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&quot;My goal was to present the border as something which is bucolic and porous and that&#39;s not necessarily the way it is,&quot; he said. &quot;Most of the photographs in the project, they look benign and innocent as if you could just walk from one nation to another. But that&#39;s really not the case.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Before or after almost every shot Rutkauskas had an encounter with someone from U.S. Border Patrol, the&nbsp;RCMP or the Canada Border Services Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Some were&nbsp;helpful, even moving their cars so he could get the shot he wanted, and giving him recommendations on where to go next. They made it clear, however, what he could and could not take pictures of because of security restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>With others, he had &quot;heated conversations&quot; and those came when Rutkauskas stood in &quot;no man&#39;s land.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Inserted from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/border-crossing-photos-rutkauskas-1.3540709?cmp=rss\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>CBC<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">The most eastern border crossing is&nbsp;&nbsp;<b>Lubec &#8211; Campobello Border Crossing<\/b>&nbsp;connecting the towns of&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lubec,_Maine\" title=\"Lubec, Maine\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Lubec, Maine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Welshpool,_New_Brunswick&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" title=\"Welshpool, New Brunswick (page does not exist)\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Welshpool, New Brunswick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"LubecMaine FDRBridge.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/3\/3f\/LubecMaine_FDRBridge.jpg\/300px-LubecMaine_FDRBridge.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">While the main western crossing is The Peace Arch crossing at Surrey, BC and Blaine, WA, there is a small crossing at Point Roberts, WA &#8212; Point Roberts being a &quot;mistake&quot; made by the Border Commission. &nbsp;And of course there are crossings with BC &#8211; Alaska and the Yukon &#8211; Alaska.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/f\/f6\/Peacearchuscanadaborder.JPG\/220px-Peacearchuscanadaborder.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">And then there are&nbsp;the towns of&nbsp;Stanstead, Que., and Derby Line, Vermont. &nbsp;The border runs through these two adjoined communities, sometimes even through buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.canadiangeographic.ca\/magazine\/ja10\/images\/pic_feat_05.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size:9px;\">A thick, white line separating Canada and the U.S. runs between the towns. A&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.annexation.ca\/reports\/2004%20Leger%20Marketing%20-%20Canada%20US%20Relations.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2004 poll from Leger marketing<\/a>&nbsp;found just 7 per cent of Canadians were even vaguely interested in merging with the U.S. So obviously, Canada made the right call.
