Senator Al Franken should be the Democratic Party&rsquo;s choice for vice president.<\/p>\n<p>If I had said that 10 years ago, or even six months ago, the notion would have been preposterous: a former&nbsp;<i>Saturday Night Live<\/i>&nbsp;writer, perhaps best known as the mock self-help guru Stuart Smalley, Franken became synonymous with left-wing bombast thanks to his best-selling book&nbsp;<i>Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot.<\/i>&nbsp;He took the presidency itself as a joke, writing a satirical campaign memoir,&nbsp;<i>Why Not Me,<\/i>&nbsp;in which Franken wins the White House on a platform of eliminating ATM fees, only to be quickly chased out by the &ldquo;Joint Congressional Committee on the President&#39;s Mood Swings.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hillary Clinton and Al Franken\" src=\"http:\/\/static2.politico.com\/dims4\/default\/0af7bf9\/2147483647\/resize\/1160x%3E\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.politico.com%2Fd9%2F09%2F1c6987e24d2d80d5d173c192746d%2Ffranken-and-hillary.jpg\" \/><iframe frameborder=\"0\" height=\"0\" id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/6326\/politico-magazine\/magazine_3__hidden__\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/6326\/politico-magazine\/magazine_3__hidden__\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"\" width=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But for a 2016 presidential race that&rsquo;s already stranger than fiction, his party truly needs someone like Franken if it&rsquo;s going to win the presidency.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">The primaries and caucuses aren&#39;t even over; the party nominees not yet decided. &nbsp;But talk is surfacing in some quarters about potential VP&nbsp;running mates. &nbsp;I find it rather presumptive that Clinton is the nominee, but whatever. This isn&#39;t about her but about a possible running mate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/election-2016\/6-ways-elizabeth-warren-trashed-trump-week-and-stood-bernie\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Alternet<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8212;&nbsp;Massachusetts Sen.
