{"id":2070,"date":"2010-06-29T02:33:57","date_gmt":"2010-06-29T09:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=2070"},"modified":"2010-06-29T02:33:57","modified_gmt":"2010-06-29T09:33:57","slug":"compassionate-conservatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/06\/29\/compassionate-conservatives\/","title":{"rendered":"&ldquo;Compassionate&rdquo; Conservatives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the GOP\u2019s (and one DINO\u2019s) reasons for blocking an extension of unemployment benefits for over 1 million Americans.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"><span style=\"color: #242424\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/29obstruction.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 0px 5px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"29obstruction\" border=\"0\" alt=\"29obstruction\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/29obstruction_thumb.jpg\" width=\"209\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a> Chuck Grassley reiterates that the GOP would be fine with extending jobless benefits, as long as they are paid for with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/90317\/grassley-unemployment-extension-will-pass-if-dems-can-pay-for-it\" target=\"_blank\">already appropriated stimulus funds<\/a><span style=\"color: #242424\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\">\u201cNinety percent of the bill isn\u2019t controversial,\u201d Grassley said, concluding that the big problem is that he and many other lawmakers <strong>don\u2019t want to add to the federal deficit<\/strong>. He chided Democrats for refusing to pay fully for the legislation with offsetting savings, revenue increases or the remaining federal stimulus funds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"><span style=\"color: #222222\">Even though Democrats <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/iowaindependent.com\/37103\/scaled-back-jobs-bill-rejected-in-u-s-senate\" target=\"_blank\">repeatedly cut the bill<\/a><span style=\"color: #222222\"> in an effort to win Republican backing, the latest version would have added $55 billion to the nation\u2019s $1.4 trillion deficit over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Grassley said he\u2019s heard from his constituents that <strong>they are tired of the government running up huge debt<\/strong>, and that the message is starting to get through to Democrats as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t just Republicans who voted against the bill in the U.S. House,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were plenty of Blue Dog Democrats who don\u2019t agree with this type of spending either.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; color: #242424; font-size: 8.25pt\">There are two basic problems with that. First, <strong>jobless benefits have always been passed as emergency funding, in every Congress under every administration<\/strong> since the program was created.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"><span style=\"color: #242424\">But, second, with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2010-06-25\/states-of-crisis-widen-as-46-governments-in-u-s-face-greek-style-deficits.html\" target=\"_blank\">states in dire crisis<\/a><span style=\"color: #242424\"> and stimulus funds already drying up, what&#8217;s left of that money needs to be used for the purpose it was intended: creating new jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"><span style=\"color: #242424\"><strong>Republicans are holding the economy hostage<\/strong>, with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/mojo\/2010\/06\/centrist-pols-jobless-rate-no-emergency\" target=\"_blank\">enabling of Ben Nelson<\/a><span style=\"color: #242424\">, who&#8217;s bored with hearing about the jobless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\">[A]s Sen. Debbie Stabenow told reporters yesterday afternoon, the same should&#8217;ve applied to the current jobs bill: &quot;15 million people unemployed,&quot; she stressed, &quot;is an emergency.&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\">Not so, according to Ben Nelson. &quot;I don\u2019t buy that distinction,&quot; Nelson said yesterday. &quot;At some point, it ceases to be an emergency.
