{"id":20368,"date":"2016-03-06T15:41:54","date_gmt":"2016-03-06T23:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=20368"},"modified":"2016-03-06T15:41:54","modified_gmt":"2016-03-06T23:41:54","slug":"squatchs-open-thread-06032016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2016\/03\/06\/squatchs-open-thread-06032016\/","title":{"rendered":"Squatch&#8217;s Open Thread 06\/03\/2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">I really did have a much needed lazy day yesterday and did not do a post. &nbsp;But today, I am a little more active with the post done and now I am off to see my mother. &nbsp;I have some new clothes for her so I am hoping she likes them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Short Takes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/worldviews\/wp\/2016\/02\/29\/the-many-ways-canadas-trudeau-is-the-anti-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Washington Post<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8212;&nbsp;For some, the improbable presidential candidacy of Donald Trump<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/gop-leaders-you-must-do-everything-in-your-power-to-stop-trump\/2016\/02\/24\/d993b548-db0e-11e5-891a-4ed04f4213e8_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">stopped&nbsp;being funny<\/a>&nbsp;long ago.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-donald-doesnt-have-a-lockyet-1456359765\" target=\"_blank\">Republican&nbsp;eminences<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/daily-comment\/the-dilemma-of-conservatives-who-say-theyll-never-vote-for-donald-trump?intcid=mod-most-popular\">custodians of the establishment<\/a>&nbsp;gawk at the GOP front-runner&#39;s &nbsp;belligerent braggadocio, his irreverent&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/amy-davidson\/lessons-from-the-donald-trump-marco-rubio-screamfest?intcid=mod-most-popular\" target=\"_blank\">attacks<\/a>&nbsp;on party grandees, his far-fetched&nbsp;proposals, his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/fact-checker\/wp\/2016\/02\/26\/fact-checking-the-tenth-gop-debate\/?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_factchecker-1215am%3Ahomepage%2Fstory\" target=\"_blank\">aversion to substance&nbsp;or basic&nbsp;facts<\/a><em>,&nbsp;<\/em>and his&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/wp\/2015\/12\/07\/how-donald-trump-may-be-helping-the-islamic-state\/\" target=\"_blank\">not even thinly veiled bigotry<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And yet, Trump stands on the cusp of winning the Republican nomination, impervious to the slings and arrows of a growing list of vanquished foes.<\/p>\n<p>There is one man, though, who seems to have also mastered the art of branding and showmanship for an adoring if partisan public &mdash; in a completely opposite fashion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.washingtonpost.com\/wp-apps\/imrs.php?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Frf%2Fimage_908w%2F2010-2019%2FWashingtonPost%2F2015%2F12%2F12%2FForeign%2FImages%2FCanada_Syrian_Refugees-0d31f-6367.jpg&amp;w=480&amp;h=320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Canada&#39;s new Liberal prime minister, Justin Trudeau, stormed to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/wp\/2015\/10\/20\/canadas-justin-trudeau-leads-a-liberal-landslide-in-stunning-election-victory\/\">a stunning electoral victory<\/a>&nbsp;last year. He did so while&nbsp;coping with the attacks of opponents who cast him as an inexperienced, slightly buffoonish dilettante trading on a powerful family legacy. Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p>But Trudeau&#39;s progressive, inclusive message could not be more different than that of Trump. Here&#39;s a rundown.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">This coming week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet Barak Obama during&nbsp;a state visit to Washington. &nbsp;From a few headlines I&#39;ve seen, Trudeau it seems is a bit of a celebrity in the US. &nbsp;Today, he is scheduled to be on 60 Minutes. &nbsp;But probably what is most revealing is that he is being hearalded as the &quot;anti-Trump&quot;. &nbsp;Click through to see how he is perceived as the &quot;anti-Trump&quot;. &nbsp;There are several short videos too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>YouTube<\/strong><\/span> &#8212;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"695\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BVwFmdipfZg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Bill Maher&#39;s New Rules is spot on!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/tea-party-and-right\/toxic-factors-give-rise-right-wing-populists-trump-berlusconi-and-hitler\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Alternet<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"> &#8212;&nbsp;<\/span>Right-wing populists ascend when three toxic forces converge. First, the economy needs to be really lousy for most citizens. Check.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the political system ceases to be able to solve problems and loses legitimacy with regular people. Check.<\/p>\n<p>Third, some foreign menace causes people to seek shelter in a strongman. Check.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Click through for the remainder of this excellent article. &nbsp;Comparisons between Trump and Hitler have been made for months now. &nbsp;I started revisiting my history classes to get a feel for what was happening in Germany during Hitler&#39;s rise. &nbsp;And it seems that the first part of the article pretty much captures my thinking. &nbsp;To me, there&#39;s no two ways about it, Trump is a scary idiot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Upworthy<\/strong> &#8212;&nbsp;<\/span>The Empowerment Plan makes coats that double as sleeping bags for the homeless, but they didn&#39;t stop there.
