This afternoon, I will go to see my mother and hopefully she&#39;ll be rid of her chest infection. &nbsp;Have a great weekend everyone!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Short Takes&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/repairing-american-democracy-should-be-a-central-issue-in-the-2016-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>The Nation<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8212;&nbsp;But in addition to the gridlock and rancor in Washington, the American political system has gotten much worse since Obama was elected, through no fault of his own.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court allowed unlimited secret&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomdispatch.com\/blog\/175504\/tomgram%3A_ari_berman,_the_politics_of_the_super_rich\/\">campaign contributions<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2016\/02\/09\/books-give-us-the-ballot-voting-rights-act\">gutted the Voting Rights Act<\/a>. Twenty-one states passed&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/new-voting-restrictions-2010-election\">new voting restrictions<\/a>&nbsp;targeting the core of Obama&rsquo;s political coalition. Roughly 80 other Mexican chefs have also joined the fight against GMO corn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"695\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4o4yL7-ND1I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Of course, two&nbsp;things that Monsanto does not say are 1) the GMO corn will contaminate the ancient varieties; and&nbsp;2) farmers will be forced to buy corn seed from Monsanto which will further endanger the survival of these ancient varieties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2016\/01\/ted-cruz-john-f-kennedy-213545\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Politico Magazine<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8212;&nbsp;Senator Ted Cruz invoked President John F. Kennedy&#39;s name and legacy in a campaign appearance the other day, arguing that if he were alive today, Kennedy would be a Republican. Specifically, he said Kennedy &ldquo;would be tarred and feathered by the modern Democratic Party.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"20150120_Kennedy_CruzNoKennedy2_Getty.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/static2.politico.com\/dims4\/default\/f2246f0\/2147483647\/resize\/1160x%3E\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.politico.com%2F49%2Fc2%2Fe37f1fda4a538ba162e1fd3bb727%2F20150120-kennedy-cruznokennedy2-getty.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As Kennedy&rsquo;s grandson, and as a student of his life, legacy and administration, I find this notion&mdash;and the suggestion that Ted Cruz is somehow taking up his mantle&mdash;absurd. Under pressure from the state&#39;s largest electric utility, NV Energy, state regulators agreed to drastically roll back a key financial incentive for rooftop solar installations. The move, which applied both to new solar users and to homes already equipped with panels, could leave existing customers on the hook for thousands of dollars in higher electricity costs. It also obliterated the economic case for prospective solar buyers. And it prompted a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/business\/the_juice\/2016\/01\/solarcity_and_vivint_pulled_out_of_nevada_is_solar_power_losing_at_the_state.html\" target=\"_blank\">mass exodus of solar contractors<\/a>&nbsp;in the state with the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seia.org\/research-resources\/2014-top-10-solar-states\" target=\"_blank\">most solar jobs<\/a>per capita.
