{"id":18959,"date":"2016-01-15T00:07:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-15T08:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=18959"},"modified":"2016-01-15T00:07:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-15T08:07:38","slug":"squatchs-open-thread-14012016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2016\/01\/15\/squatchs-open-thread-14012016\/","title":{"rendered":"Squatch&#8217;s Open Thread 14\/01\/2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">I know the Republican debate was tonight, and I don&#39;t want to tread on TC&#39;s detailed report that I am sure he is preparing, but I couldn&#39;t help but shake my head at the stupidity of the Huckster and Santorum. &nbsp;Is it any wonder why they are relegated to the kid&#39;s table? &nbsp;And today I read somewhere that voters were supposed to pick their representatives, not candidates picking their voters . . . a response to gerrymandering. &nbsp;It is sad that there are voters that would actually vote for these two, or any Republican for that matter!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Short Takes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/11\/opinion\/the-obama-boom.html?rref=collection%2Fcolumn%2Fpaul-krugman&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=opinion&amp;region=stream&amp;module=stream_unit&amp;version=latest&amp;contentPlacement=1&amp;pgtype=collection&amp;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>NY Times<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8212;&nbsp;So what should we say about the Obama job record?&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/research.stlouisfed.org\/fred2\/series\/USPRIV\" title=\"Federal Reserve Bank site\">Private-sector employment<\/a>&nbsp;&mdash; the relevant number, as I&rsquo;ll explain in a minute &mdash; hit its low point in February 2010. Since then we&rsquo;ve gained 14 million jobs, a figure that startled even me, roughly double the number of jobs added during the supposed Bush boom before it turned into the Great Recession. If that was a boom, this expansion, capped by last month&rsquo;s really good report, outbooms it by a wide margin.<\/p>\n<aside role=\"complementary\">\n<header>\n<p>Does&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/o\/barack_obama\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" title=\"More articles about Barack Obama\">President Obama<\/a>&nbsp;deserve credit for these gains? No. In general, presidents and their policies matter much less for the economy&rsquo;s performance than most people imagine. <strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-node-uid=\"1\" data-para-count=\"376\" data-total-count=\"4858\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">But for those who don&rsquo;t know much about either history or the world outside America, the Obama economy offers a powerful lesson in the here and now. <strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">From a <u><em>conservative<\/em><\/u> point of view, Mr. Obama did everything wrong, afflicting the comfortable (slightly) and comforting the afflicted (a lot), and nothing bad happened.<\/span><\/strong> We can, it turns out, make our society better after all.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Obama will always be guilty of being POTUS while black, so absolutely nothing he does will ever measure up for the conservatives. &nbsp;And as Krugman says, &quot;&#8230; presidents and their policies matter much less for the economy&rsquo;s performance&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">&quot;. &nbsp;But they are still important for setting a certain tone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/2016\/01\/mike-huckabee-poor-americans-will-be-better-off-if-we-treat-them-like-we-train-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Raw Story<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8212; Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee argued on Thursday that the &ldquo;common sense&rdquo; way to improve the economy was to treat taxpayers the with same techniques used to &ldquo;train dogs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"695\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9YiWwEZ0jLQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\">Who put what in Huck&#39;s kibble? &nbsp;Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr woof!! &nbsp;The Huckster has no idea what common sense is! &nbsp;Wherre does he get this BS? &nbsp;What&#39;s more, why do people even listen to him?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/mojo\/2016\/01\/rick-santorum-deportation-export-america\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF;\"><strong>Mother Jones<\/strong><\/span><\/a><font color=\"#0000ff\"> &#8212;&nbsp;<\/font>Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum offered a spirited defense of mass deportations at Thursday&#39;s Republican undercard debate in South Carolina. Only he didn&#39;t call it deportation.
