{"id":18593,"date":"2015-12-26T09:15:42","date_gmt":"2015-12-26T17:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=18593"},"modified":"2015-12-26T09:15:42","modified_gmt":"2015-12-26T17:15:42","slug":"the-government-money-is-buying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2015\/12\/26\/the-government-money-is-buying\/","title":{"rendered":"The Government Money is Buying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I\u2019ve heard a lot of crowing about how funding for Planned Parenthood survived the budget deal passed by Congress.&#160; Don\u2019t misunderstand me.&#160; I\u2019ll all for Planned Parenthood.&#160; It\u2019s one of few organizations that received a small year-end gift from me, in spite of all my medical expenses.&#160; However, I almost wish their funding had been cut, instead of a couple of the provisions that Republicans slimed in there.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"1226politicsdarkmoney\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"1226politicsdarkmoney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/1226politicsdarkmoney.jpg\" width=\"360\" align=\"left\" height=\"288\" \/>As untold millions of dollars pour into the shadowy campaign troughs of the presidential candidates, voters need to be reminded of the rosy assumptions of the Supreme Court\u2019s Citizens United decision that legitimized the new spending frenzy.<\/p>\n<p>In allowing unlimited spending on candidates by corporations and unions, the court\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/09pdf\/08-205.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">decision,<\/a> in 2010, blithely pronounced, \u201cA campaign finance system that pairs corporate independent expenditures with effective disclosure has not existed before today.\u201d Effective disclosure exists?<\/p>\n<p>The court majority in the 5-to-4 decision should have been watching this month when the Republican-controlled Congress, which has firmly bottled up all campaign disclosure legislation, voted to further cripple disclosure at two of its most vital points.<\/p>\n<p>In the new budget bill, Republicans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/politics\/first-draft\/2015\/12\/17\/spending-bill-to-block-limits-on-outside-political-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\">inserted a provision<\/a> <strong>blocking the Internal Revenue Service from creating rules to curb the growing abuse of the tax law by thinly veiled political machines posing as \u201csocial welfare\u201d organizations<\/strong>. <strong>These groups are financed by rich special-interest donors who do not have to reveal their identities under the tax law<\/strong>. So much for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/17\/opinion\/a-new-budget-for-a-new-year.html\" target=\"_blank\">effective disclosure<\/a> at the I.R.S.<\/p>\n<p>In another move to keep the public blindfolded about who is writing big corporate checks for federal candidates, the <strong>Republicans barred the Securities and Exchange Commission from finalizing rules requiring corporations to disclose their campaign spending to investors<\/strong>.
