{"id":1836,"date":"2010-06-12T01:32:19","date_gmt":"2010-06-12T08:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=1836"},"modified":"2010-06-12T01:32:19","modified_gmt":"2010-06-12T08:32:19","slug":"guess-who-opposes-the-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/06\/12\/guess-who-opposes-the-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Guess Who Opposes the War?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">The list of people who do not support the war in Afghanistan just got bigger.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"><span style=\"color: #242424\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/afghanistanout.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"afghanistanout\" border=\"0\" alt=\"afghanistanout\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/afghanistanout_thumb.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a> Well, this is fun. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2010\/jun\/09\/afghanistan-taliban-us-hamid-karzai\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a><span style=\"color: #242424\"> is reporting that someone finally has given up on the U.S. war in Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\"><strong>President Hamid Karzai has lost faith in the US strategy in Afghanistan<\/strong> and is increasingly looking to Pakistan to end the insurgency, according to those close to Afghanistan&#8217;s former head of intelligence services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\">Amrullah Saleh, who resigned last weekend, believes the president lost confidence some time ago in the ability of Nato forces to defeat the Taliban. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"><span style=\"color: #242424\">Karzai has lost faith in the nation that has sacrificed so many lives, and wasted so much money and time protecting him. But it&#8217;s not exactly a surprise. As <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/2010\/06\/06\/95409\/afghan-president-karzai-ousts.html\" target=\"_blank\">McClatchy<\/a><span style=\"color: #242424\"> reported, when Saleh and Interior Minister Hanif Atmar were pushed aside, last week:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\"><strong>Saleh and Atmar were both regarded by many Western officials as strong allies in the push to transform the Afghan government into a respected political force that won&#8217;t have to rely on international forces of more than 100,000 troops to prevent the Taliban from again seizing power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\">Their removal could weaken security ties between Karzai&#8217;s cabinet and the international community, said Thomas Ruttig, a co-director of the Afghanistan Analysts Network, an independent international research organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; font-family: verdana; color: #222222; font-size: 8.25pt\">&quot;The sacking of Saleh is a blow for the U.S., which had put a lot of resources into the (Afghan intelligence agency) and apparently had good intelligence cooperation with (it),&quot; Ruttig said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; color: #242424; font-size: 8.25pt\">Karzai is said to be turning to Pakistan and softening his tone against the Taliban. <strong>He is said to be not leading the counterinsurgency<\/strong>, even though his leadership was supposed to be a key facet of the latest U.S. escalation strategy. None of this should be a surprise.
