{"id":1786,"date":"2010-06-08T03:17:10","date_gmt":"2010-06-08T10:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=1786"},"modified":"2010-06-08T03:17:10","modified_gmt":"2010-06-08T10:17:10","slug":"the-gulf-gop-view-vs-sane-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/06\/08\/the-gulf-gop-view-vs-sane-view\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gulf: GOP View vs Sane View"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Republicans&#160; don\u2019t seem to want a little thing like the destruction of the Gulf of Mexico to interfere with the profits of the corporations that own them.&#160; Haley Barbour is a prime example:<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"><span style=\"color: #242424\">As dumb as Haley Barbour&#8217;s oil spill <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/06\/06\/haley-barbour-oil-what-oi_n_602088.html\" target=\"_blank\">denialism<\/a><span style=\"color: #242424\"> sounded, and as silly as Fox&#8217;s Bill Hemmer looked when he defended Barbour, the Barbour&#8217;s stupidest comments came when he joined Bobby Jindal in demanding an expansion of dangerous deepwater drilling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; color: #242424; font-size: 8.25pt\">&#160;<object width=\"448\" height=\"284\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.dailykostv.com\/flv\/player.swf\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"flashvars\" value=\"config=http:\/\/www.dailykostv.com\/w\/002732\/vxml.php?448\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.dailykostv.com\/flv\/player.swf\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"448\" height=\"284\" flashvars=\"config=http:\/\/www.dailykostv.com\/w\/002732\/vxml.php?448\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: verdana; color: #242424; font-size: 8.25pt\">Let&#8217;s take your points one-by-one, Haley:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div style=\"font-style: italic; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #242424; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\">&quot;In the last 50 years, the four states that allow offshore drilling on the gulf, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Alabama \u2014 more than 30,000 wells have been drilled in the Gulf of Mexico. This is the first time in that more than 30,000 we have ever had anything like this happen.&quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"> Um, Haley, you&#8217;re looking at the biggest environmental disaster in American history. If you want to base your argument on the offshore drilling industry&#8217;s safety track record, you can&#8217;t just brush it to the side &#8212; especially when we&#8217;re now pushing new frontiers.<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"font-style: italic; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #242424; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\">&quot;These big oil rigs \u2014 by the way, B.P. and Transocean are not even American companies.&quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"> So you think that we should trust foreign companies to mine our natural resources?<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"font-style: italic; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #242424; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\">&quot;In six months, these oil rigs aren&#8217;t going to be sitting around the gulf waiting. They&#8217;re going to be in west Africa.&quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"> Trust me, if there&#8217;s oil in the Gulf, and we can drill it safely, we&#8217;ll have no problem finding somebody willing to do the work. Maybe even a domestic company.<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"font-style: italic; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #242424; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: verdana; color: #242424; font-size: 8.25pt\">&quot;About 30 percent of America&#8217;s production of oil and gas coming out of the Gulf of Mexico.&quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: verdana; color: #242424; font-size: 8.25pt\"> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.doe.gov\/oog\/special\/gulf\/gulf_fact_sheet.html?featureclicked=5&amp;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: verdana; color: #242424; font-size: 8.25pt\">Actually<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: verdana; color: #242424; font-size: 8.25pt\">, 8% of America&#8217;s daily liquid fuel production comes from the Gulf (and 10% of crude oil), and none of that will be impacted by the moratorium, which applies to new drilling, not existing production sites.<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"font-style: italic; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #242424; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\">&quot;And the loss of production that we&#8217;re going to suffer will make us even more dependent on the Middle East, on Venezuela, on people that aren&#8217;t our friends.&quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"> See #4, and then answer this: why, Haley, are you opposed to a massive national effort to develop alternative sources of energy that we can produce domestically?<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"font-style: italic; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #242424; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\">&quot;And let me tell you one other little thing environmentalists ought to think about. Of the 10 worst oil spills in American history, seven of them were from ships.&quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: verdana; font-size: 8.25pt\"> I haven&#8217;t fact-checked that, but even it&#8217;s true, the largest spill &#8212; by far &#8212; was from deepwater exploration. And that\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">We need to save everything we can, but we also need to go to work to learn how to restore the environment, including the part we can\u2019t see, which is the majority of the damage.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republicans&#160;
