{"id":1487,"date":"2010-05-13T02:20:59","date_gmt":"2010-05-13T09:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=1487"},"modified":"2010-05-13T02:20:59","modified_gmt":"2010-05-13T09:20:59","slug":"action-alert-the-kerry-lieberman-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2010\/05\/13\/action-alert-the-kerry-lieberman-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Action Alert: The Kerry-Lieberman Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">I would expect this from Traitor Joe, but Kerry should hang his head in shame!<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 11pt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/earthegg.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; margin: 2px 0px 5px 10px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"earthegg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"earthegg\" align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/earthegg_thumb.jpg\" width=\"228\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a> In the midst of what appears to be the worst offshore oil disaster in American history, U.S. Senators John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) will today put forth a draft climate bill that will not solve the problems of global warming and <strong>continues pandering to the fossil fuel industry<\/strong> &#8212; including expanded offshore oil drilling &#8212; that created the problems in the first place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 11pt\">The proposal, leaked one day before its official release, reflects months of back-room negotiations between the senators, major polluters, and other Washington insiders, and would:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0in; unicode-bidi: embed; direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0in; margin-left: 0.75in\" type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: black; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: 11pt\">provide <strong>only a fraction<\/strong> of the greenhouse gas pollution reductions scientists have said are necessary to avoid catastrophic climate disruption;<\/span> <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: black; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: 11pt\"><strong>ban successful Clean Air Act programs<\/strong> from reducing greenhouse pollution;<\/span> <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: black; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: 11pt\"><strong>ban existing state and local efforts<\/strong> to tackle climate change;<\/span> <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: black; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: 11pt\">catalyze increased oil and gas drilling &#8212; <strong>including offshore drilling<\/strong>; and<\/span> <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: black; vertical-align: middle\"><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: 11pt\">subsidize dangerous and costly nuclear energy. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 11pt\">In response, Center for Biological Diversity Executive Director Kier\u00e1n Suckling urged rejection of the proposal unless these problems are addressed. He issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 11pt\">&quot;The climate proposal put forth today by Senators Kerry and Lieberman represents a disaster for our climate and planet. This proposal moves us <strong>one baby step forward and at least three giant steps back<\/strong> in any rational effort to address the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: arial; color: black; font-size: 11pt\">&quot;The senators&#8217; proposal would entrench our addiction to fossil fuels by <strong>offering incentives for increased oil and gas drilling<\/strong> just days after what appears to be the worst offshore oil disaster in American history. Large domes, small domes, golf balls, garbage, chemical dispersants, fire &#8212; none have succeeded in stopping the enormous flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
