John Kitzhaber, ending <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/mapes\/index.ssf\/2015\/02\/john_kitzhaber_how_a_durable_p.html#incart_maj-story-1\" target=\"_blank\">a storied 37-year career in politics<\/a>, relinquished his office Friday after a week of escalating pressure.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2015\/02\/oregon_governor_john_kitzhaber_4.html\" target=\"_blank\">a defiant statement<\/a> issued just after noon, the governor bowed to a public corruption controversy involving allegations that he and fianc\u00e9e Cylvia Hayes abused his office.
