Bob Livingston. As part of that report, reporter John Mercurio also talked to up-and-coming Louisiana politicians, current Sen. David Vitter and current House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cI honestly think his 15 minutes of fame have come and gone,\u201d said state Rep. David Vitter (R), a wealthy Metairie attorney who holds Duke\u2019s old seat in the state House and is \u201cseriously considering\u201d a Congressional bid. \u201cWhen he\u2019s competed in a field with real conservatives, real Republicans, Duke has not done well at all.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Another potential candidate, state Rep. Steve Scalise (R), said he embraces many of the same \u201cconservative\u201d views as Duke, but is far more viable.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cThe novelty of David Duke has worn off,\u201d said Scalise. \u201cThe voters in this district are smart enough to realize that they need to get behind someone who not only believes in the issues they care about, but also can get elected. Duke has proven that he can\u2019t get elected, and that\u2019s the first and most important thing.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">&#8230;Scalise addressed Duke\u2019s European-American Unity and Rights Organization <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.rollcall.com\/218\/probable-that-rep-steve-scalise-addressed-white-supremacist-group\/\" target=\"_blank\">back in 2002<\/a><font color=\"#0066cc\"><\/font>&#8230;<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inserted from &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.rollcall.com\/218\/scalise-vitter-talked-to-roll-call-about-david-duke-in-1999\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roll Call<\/a>&gt;<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">The Republican leadership has accepted Scalise\u2019s disingenuous excuse, that he did not know.&#160; How pathetic!&#160; That an LA politician to claim ignorance that Duke was Clan could not be more incredible.&#160; Even Diaper Dave knew that Scalise embraces Duke\u2019s racist values.&#160; But then, every time a black voter is turned away from the voting booth, it proves that those are also the values of the Republican Party.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is the sixty-fifth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become.
