{"id":14359,"date":"2014-12-23T00:01:13","date_gmt":"2014-12-23T08:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=14359"},"modified":"2014-12-23T00:01:13","modified_gmt":"2014-12-23T08:01:13","slug":"last-weeks-most-demented-republican-moments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2014\/12\/23\/last-weeks-most-demented-republican-moments\/","title":{"rendered":"Last Week&#8217;s Most Demented Republican Moments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">Almost every week, Republicans join a competition to see who can say the most outlandish things, and in the process, they push the envelope on just how demented InsaniTEA can become.&#160; I trust that you will believe it, when I tell you that last week was no exception.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><span><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"ScaliaHat\" style=\"float: left; display: inline\" alt=\"ScaliaHat\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/ScaliaHat.jpg\" width=\"360\" align=\"left\" height=\"250\" \/>Antonin Scalia: Torturing convicts is a no-go, but torturing suspects is A-OK.<\/strong><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia was asked this week by the BBC about the CIA\u2019s fully exposed use of torture in the years after the 9\/11 attacks, and he found, shall we say, some rather interesting hairs to split.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cWe have laws against torture,\u201d Scalia said. (Whew.) But then he added, \u201cThe Constitution says nothing whatever about torture. It speaks of punishment; \u2018cruel and unusual\u2019 punishments are forbidden.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cSo torture is forbidden, in that case?\u201d his interlocutor asked.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cIf it\u2019s imposed as a punishment, yes,\u201d Scalia responded. \u201cIf you condemn someone who has committed a crime to be tortured, that would be unconstitutional.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">OK, good. But notice how it seems to leave a bit of an opening for torture. That\u2019s not a mistake. When Scalia is asked about torture as a tool for interrogation, his tune changes: \u201cWe have never held that that\u2019s contrary to the Constitution. And I don\u2019t know what provision of the Constitution that would contravene.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Uh oh.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cListen, I think it is very facile for people to say, \u2018Oh, torture is terrible.\u2019 You posit the situation where a person that you know for sure knows the location of a nuclear bomb that has been planted in Los Angeles and will kill millions of people. You think it\u2019s an easy question? You think it\u2019s clear that you cannot use extreme measures to get that information out of that person? I don\u2019t think that\u2019s so clear at all.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in 0in 0in 0.375in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">\u201cAnd once again, it\u2019s this sort of self-righteousness of European liberals who answer that question so readily and so easily. It\u2019s not that easy a question.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: ; margin: 0in; line-height: normal\"><font style=\"font-size: 12pt\">There you have it, you European liberals always unreasonably saying never to torture people. It&#8217;s fine to torture some people, sometimes.
