{"id":13670,"date":"2014-09-14T00:01:21","date_gmt":"2014-09-14T07:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=13670"},"modified":"2014-09-14T00:01:21","modified_gmt":"2014-09-14T07:01:21","slug":"will-republicans-steal-the-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2014\/09\/14\/will-republicans-steal-the-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Republicans Steal the Vote?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">The Republican Party is facing an ever increasing problem.&#160; They can count up all the millionaires and billionaires with no sense of their civic responsibility.&#160; They can add in all the racists, homophobes, misogynists, polluters, militias, warmongers, hatemongers, pseudo-Christians, etc.,&#160; for whose support the Republican party has sold their soul.&#160; They can add to that all the fools stupid enough to watch and believe the Republican Reichsministry of Propaganda, <em>Faux Noise<\/em>.&#160; They still won\u2019t have enough to hold power.&#160; That leaves just one last thing.&#160; If they can disenfranchise enough of the majority, they may be able to steal the vote.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOPvoting\" style=\"float: left; display: inline\" alt=\"GOPvoting\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/GOPvoting.png\" width=\"360\" align=\"left\" height=\"360\" \/>In the summer of 2012, Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R) <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/muckraker\/pennsylvania-gop-leader-voter-id-will-help-romney-win-state\" target=\"_blank\">bragged<\/a> that the voter ID law he\u2019d helped pass was \u201cgonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania.\u201d That law was short-lived: a federal judge issued a ruling that, as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/01\/18\/us\/politics\/pennsylvania-voter-id-law-struck-down.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times reported<\/a>, the law \u201champered the ability of hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians to cast their ballots, with the burden falling most heavily on elderly, disabled and low-income residents, and that the state\u2019s reason for the law \u2014 that it was needed to combat voter fraud \u2014 was not supported by the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This summer, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp was caught in a moment of candor when he warned a crowd of fellow Republicans: \u201cThe Democrats are working hard\u2026 registering all these minority voters that are out there and others that are sitting on the sidelines, [and] if they can do that, they can win these elections in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act last June, it was an open invitation to states with a history of voting discrimination \u2013 previously required to clear voting restrictions with the Department of Justice \u2013 to enact laws that made it harder for traditionally Democratic-leaning groups to cast a ballot. The demographic headwinds facing the GOP, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2014\/04\/federal-judge-in-wisconsin-looks-for-voter-fraud-finds-none\/361403\/\" target=\"_blank\">rather than the mythical specter of voter fraud<\/a>, motivated those legislatures to do so with gusto. <strong>According to the Brennan Center for Justice, 22 states have enacted new voting restrictions since the Republican \u201cwave\u201d election in 2010<\/strong>. For 15 of them, this November <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-fix\/wp\/2014\/07\/07\/how-has-voting-changed-since-shelby-county-v-holder\/\" target=\"_blank\">will be the first test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the fight for voting rights continues in the courts.
