From The New Yorker<\/a>: <\/font>Across the United States on Wednesday, a heated national debate began on the extremely complex issue of children firing military weapons.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery now and then, the nation debates an issue that is so complicated and tricky it defies easy answers,\u201d says pollster Davis Logsdon. \u201cLetting small children fire automatic weapons is such an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Logsdon says that the thorny controversy is reminiscent of another ongoing national debate, about whether it is a good idea to load a car with dynamite and drive it into a tree.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany Americans think it\u2019s a terrible idea, but others believe that with the correct supervision, it\u2019s perfectly fine,\u201d he says. \u201cWho\u2019s to say who\u2019s right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Similar, he says, is the national debate about using a flamethrower indoors. \u201cThere has been a long and contentious national conversation about this,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s another tough one.\u201d<\/p>\n
