{"id":12790,"date":"2014-05-16T00:27:07","date_gmt":"2014-05-16T07:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/?p=12790"},"modified":"2014-05-16T00:34:44","modified_gmt":"2014-05-16T07:34:44","slug":"courts-likely-to-overturn-an-oregon-injustice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politicsplus.org\/blog\/2014\/05\/16\/courts-likely-to-overturn-an-oregon-injustice\/","title":{"rendered":"Courts Likely to Overturn an Oregon Injustice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font color=\"#0000ff\">As a rule, Oregon tends to lead the way for progressive values.&nbsp; However, one area in which my state has lagged behind many others is in the right of people to marry based on love, not gender.&nbsp; In 2004, Republicans got an Oregon Constitutional Amendment outlawing gay marriage on the ballot, and it passed.&nbsp; It appears we are about to rectify that injustice.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" alt=\"0516gay-marriage\" border=\"0\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/www.7thstep.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/0516gay-marriage.jpg\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px\" title=\"0516gay-marriage\" width=\"360\" \/>U.S. District Judge Michael McShane on Wednesday rejected an attempt by an anti-gay marriage group to intervene in the lawsuit seeking to overturn Oregon&#39;s ban on same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n<p>McShane&#39;s ruling raised expectations by gay marriage supporters that his next step will be to overturn the 2004 voter-approved constitutional amendment limiting marriage to one man and one woman.<\/p>\n<p>The judge&#39;s decision to reject an attempt by the National Organization for Marriage [<em>pseudo-Christians delinked<\/em>] to intervene <strong>leaves all of the official parties in the case &#8212; including <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/mapes\/index.ssf\/2014\/02\/gay_marriage_advocates_have_bi.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum<\/strong><\/a><strong> &#8212; arguing that Oregon&#39;s prohibition violates the federal equal protection of rights of gay and lesbian couples seeking to marry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We feel very confident this is headed in the right direction,&quot; said David Fidanque, executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aclu-or.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oregon chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union<\/a>, which is representing some of the plaintiffs in the case.
